I love how everyone's geeking out about Sky Attack and Legendaries and game mechanics....
And yet they miss the awesome flying Ross in the first panel.
And the fact that Ross apparently actually landed back on Matthew's back post-attack.
Sure, Matthew could have swooped up and caught him, but he did just slam his face into a Darkrai. Ross is secretly a ninja, apparently.

Wow, Darkrai just took a STAB-enhanced, Critical Sky Attack to the gut, and legendary status or not, he can't just shrug off that level of damage. Sure, it may not have dealt the final blow, but Matthew must have severely weakened Darkrai. If our nightmare-causing buddy had been, say, grass type, he would have been totally mulched.Β

The "Critical" was just guess. Matthew has Super Luck, which increases crit chance. It may not have been a critical hit, but my point still stands.Β

Okay, so, I actually did a bit of research on how effective Sky Attack would be. Firstly, Darkrai has base stats of 70 HP, and 90 defense. Honchkrow has a base attack stat of 125. Sky Attack does 140% damage. Now, granted, I'm not sure if this is how calculating how attack and defense compare to each other, but by subtracting 175(125 times 1.4) from 90, I got 85. Meaning it would knock out Darkrai without even factoring in STAB. So please, tell me how Darkrai so easily managed to get back up from that. If Darkrai at least looked majorly weakened, then I would have no problems with this. But he got back up so easily, that frankly it's annoying.

I can't just assume that Darkrai is a higher level, unless there is substantial evidence that Darkrai is a higher level. And honestly, I'm tired of everyone saying it would make it boring if it were more 'realistic'. That's your opinion. In fact, it might actually be just as interesting to see Matthew defeat Darkrai like that. It would show how strong he is, and how much of a good trainer that Elisa is. It all depends on how one would write it. It wouldn't automatically be boring just because it was 'realistic'.

Yes you can. Mattew can me any level, as he evolved using a stone. But he DID defeat a charizard, so he has to be at least around level 36. Since he stopped training shortly after we can say that his minimum level is 34-36. LetΒ΄s just assume that darkrai is the same as it is in pokemon platinum, which has a level of 50, when you encounter it. Well, wh is gonna win, if we let a lv 34 non legendary fight against a level 50 legendary?

Because this is a comic with a story. Not game. Darkrai is a mythical legendary beast. They don't go down as easily as they go in game. People applying game statistic to pokemon anime/manga/stories is a little pet peeve of mine and frankly, very annoying. So no need to do that.

Okay...then why use Natures and Egg Moves in your characters bios? I'm pretty sure those are much more close to game than any other media. Heck, why give them items, which are SPECIFICALLY designed for the games like Focus Sash? You seem perfectly fine with using game mechanics when they work for you.

To give them character and personality. Limit myself to those four moves when writing and illustrating battles. (also for a reference to fan artists and fan fiction writers People kept asking me what moves they know) Items play a role when needed but are mostly there for looks. So yeah, I take what's useful for the story telling purposes. Just like they do in pokemon anime and manga. If I wanted to follow game mechanics to the T, I'd list their levels, IVs, EVs and stats. But no, I don't do that because that is not FUN.
And that is why I make comics and do stories. Because it's fun.

Oh for goodness sake. I don't care if he goes down in one strike or not, I want him to look more damaged than he is! In fact, if he did go down in one strike, it would be a powerful example of how strong Matthew is, since that was the focus of one of the previous chapters. It wouldn't automatically be boring because he went down in a single strike.
I think it would more of a wake up call to the fandom about the power of some Legendaries. Yes, Darkrai is a Legendary, but he's not even that strong of one, barely making it in as one with his base stat total of 600. The comments section here shows that people look at his Legendary status and that thus makes him too strong a Pokemon to go down so easily.
Now granted, it's just my opinion on the idea that Darkrai should go down in one hit, and I might not be taking everything into account and could have overlooked something that proves me wrong.
