Description
According to Hindu belief, a vicious demon named "Hiranyaksha", acquiring godly powers, had moved the earth from its orbit and thrown it into the cosmic ocean.
Noticing a planetary catastrophe, the great god Vishnu assumed the form of a wild boar or Varaha and plunged into the cosmic waters to save earth.
There, Hiranyaksha tried his best to subdue Varaha but was killed after a fierce battle. Thereafter, Lord Varaha rescued mother earth and brought her out of the primeval waters by placing her in between his two tusks.
Varaha may be depicted as completely a boar or in an anthropomorphic form, with a boar's head and the human body.
