A number of the armour parts in my rigs are parented to the underlying G8M mesh using three vertices, rather than just parenting the part to a corresponding armature bone. That way, the forearm armour, for example, inherits some of the twist but mostly the bend without having to weight map. I thought rigging this would be a pain and I'd have to reproduce the stormtrooper armour parenting and constraints, but all I had to do was build the parts, then join the new polygons to the existing stormtrooper part and delete the original stormtrooper polygons, which retained all of the constraints, etc, but just with new polygons. Not screen accurate but not a disaster imho.
