In the manga, Remu says "It's not love that I have for you, it's just a connection" or something to that similar effect.
She doesn't love her, she just grew a feeling for her, so if she were to kill someone and lengthen her lifespan, Remu would still die.
I don't believe they talked about it in the series, but they said it in the manga itself.

Hm..In the anime, Rem's saiyu is a girl a girl...In the manga, it doesn't say...and in the movie, 'her' saiyu is a MAN! DX Maybe he/she's gender confused. DX I always think Rem is a girl, though..oh, and REM AND RYUK FANART! SQUEE!
