Another name for the Reindeer is the Caribou, and in Inuit Mythology they have a creature known as the Tariaksuq(Terry-Ack-Sick), which for the most part is often depict has a Human-like Creature with the Head of a Caribou, so you could say that this may be a Tariaksuq version of Velvet.
