Originally posted on October 27, 2017(I think I was in a bad headspace when I was working on these ones for Rum, and ended up being so unhappy with the art I didn't even post it on dA. It was accepted as an Origin though through one of the bulk posts I did though in the past. Uploading it now for organization purposes)
Rum could remember the first time he'd left his boundary, feeling small and nervous, it was with great apprehension that he stepped out of the little meadow and into the vast plains. How things had changed now, adventure and wanderlust had gripped him, and it was with joy and curiosity that he ventured forth now. Things were changing in his heart, and he had a feeling that more changes were on the horizon.
Esks never really need to sleep, but Rum felt peace when he could drift off. Either in meditation, or a blissful calm, a dense fog of nothingness wrapping his mind in it's arms. Tonight though, he had been unable to relax. His familiars buzzed peacefully near him in his little hollow, they appeared asleep, also not because they needed sleep, but because it felt peaceful to him. When night fell, and the earth slept, he felt most comfortable resting along with it. Too many thoughts jumbled in his mind tonight however, and he was unusually irritable.
Over the past several months, he had become more and more peaceful, having traveled from his home, and even throughout the world, usually accompanied by Liet and Ayla. He had grown to love his little hollow beneath the roots, and the steady hum of insect life that thrummed there every day was peace to him. He felt that he should be happy, but something still ached at him. He would have flashbacks of his original life, as a moth. During meditation, he would hear the soft beating of wings, only to take a peek...and no one be there. He dreamt that the dust falling from his wings had erased his memory, and that he had nothing. That he was nothing.
It haunted him, and he shows away from the thoughts, feeling increasingly desperate for it to stop. He didn't know what he wanted fully, just that he didn't feel whole anymore. He would wake from a dream and look for his wings, only to be met by cruel sharp tones of a thistle petal. They were elaborate and beautifully shaped petals, with sharp pricks atop each crest, but they were not true wings... They were not his.
He thought a lot about who he was, about his transformation. Was he still grateful? To Vetru? A flash of guilt stabbed at him as he reeled from his own question. Of course he was grateful, he was... He was something, not nothing, and that was better than not being something, right?
The doubt seemed to follow him around like a cloud. His familiars rose as he shuffled towards the entryway of the tiny cave. He draped his tiny beanpod satchel across his shoulder, carefully tucking his amber necklace inside before squeezing it shut.
He drifted out of the hole into the moonlight, gazing out over the still prairie. No one shifted the grass tonight, he heard crickets, in the far off distance. He felt alone. His inchworm crept quietly up his tail, determined to climb inside the satchel. He obliged. The other two hummed quietly behind him, wondering where they were off to. Another adventure? Perhaps they'd see Liet again? Or explore a dark forest with Ayla?
No, not tonight. Tonight Rum was thinking, possibly too much, and he was sad. Tomorrow however... Tomorrow he decided he would try to find Ayla. She was always such a help these days, she'd know what to say to put his mind at peace. Perhaps she'd be able to help him. Perhaps...
The next morning he checked his little satchel once more, tucking the tiny inchworm in snug with some soft petals, and set off for the conservatory. He shifted there with ease now, and was eager to see who else was visiting today.
He floated into existence there where he usually did. A comfortable patch of grass near a large fountain.
"Oh hi Rum!!"
It was Sail! But... where?
”Over here haha, in the water!"
Rum chuckled to himself as he caught sight of the long brown esk, who had sizeshifted to the size of a mouse and was doing laps around the fountain.
"What on Earth are you doing Sail?" Rum asked, trying not to giggle too hard.
"I'm racing! You think I'll win??" Sail giggled madly, swooshing through the water like a furry torpedo, his six legs beating like mad.
Rum looked around the fountain, "Racing who?"
"No one yet! Hahaha!" Sail chirped, giggling wildly again. As if summoned, Liet appeared out of nowhere and crashed into the water next to Sail.
"Are we racing again!?" She grilled, her tiny voice filled with pure excitement.
Rum smiled inside, "You two are too much, haha. Hey, has either of you seen Ayla?"
Liet chirped, garbled by the water as Sail wrestled for the lead again. "Oh yes! She said she was going to visit Mother!"
"Ah, ok! Thank you! I'll see you guys later on alright? Don't splash all the water out of there!"
He trotted off, his little satchel rustling and jingling with his treasures.
He found Ayla within a large domed section, geometrically shaped streamlets trickled across the floor, and the sound of tinkling water echoed softly through the space. She was sitting near Mother, listening, or perhaps telling. Rum waited patiently, he didn't want to intrude. After a spell, Mother nodded her head, her oculus orb bobbing slightly, and seemed to bid Ayla farewell.
The Large sunset colored esk trotted joyfully towards Rum, shrinking as she walked, to match his size.
"You don't have to do that you know." He said, booking noses with her.
"I know, it makes it easier to see you though, I like it." She said, her voice was as gentle as the water sounds.
"I wanted to talk to you...about myself. About what I was before...this." He said, feeling suddenly unimportant in his own mind.
She could tell right away he was upset, and tried her best to change that. Her enchantment started billowing, the soft blue clouds drifting down her back and across the floor like a waterfall of fog. He instantly felt better.
"Thank you... I needed that."
"It's no problem, anytime!" She had a smile on her voice, and Rum was glad he'd decided to tell her his worries.
They strode off, two small friends, walking peacefully through the conservatory's endless gardens, talking about everything they could, and sometimes nothing at all. Things would work out, he just knew it.
