Description

Vacation had been the best week ever, or thats what Dustin had chirped excitedly several times throughout the day. He loved the ocean, his collection of shells had been growing steadily the entire week. He danced along the shore, within view of his parents who were relaxing in the shade. He tossed Keeper, his pet rock, from one hand to the other, whistling cheerfully as he looked for more shells. Something else caught his eye though, it was near the inner edge of the beach, where the sand met the grass line, and it was shaded heavily by thick foliage. Lines?
He crept closer, peering curiously under the leaves. It was a zen garden! There was no one around...was it okay to mess with? He leaned closer, it couldn't hurt to play for a bit. He saw a rough-made rake made out of reeds and string lying in the sand. Picking it up, he raked it gently. It was so fun!

For several minutes, he swirled the sand. Lines and circles, wavy lines, a checker pattern. It was relaxing. The sound of the ocean lulled Dustin into a restful peace. He smiled, perching Keeper in one of the circles he'd drawn. Before long, the sun was setting and he hadn't even noticed. A voice woke him from his calm.
"Dustin! Come on buddy! Lets pack it in, we have a long drive tomorrow!"
It was his father, Dusty glanced up quickly. "Coming Dad!" How was it already sundown!? Seashells jingling loudly in his pocket, he scampered up the sand bank eagerly. "Can we get ice cream before we go in?" he shouted, hoping to sneak in one last treat before the vacation came to a close. "Sure buddy," his dad helped him up the last bit of the embankment, "We're going to meet your aunt at a nice restaurant for dinner though, so hurry in and get cleaned up okay?"
"Okay dad!" he ran off, his voice fading into the sound of the waves as he ran.

The surf crashed against the shore, a booming thrum that further pulled the sunset scene into serenity. There, left on the beach, amidst carefully swirled sand, lie Keeper, the pet rock that Dusty carried everywhere with him. Left in a rush, he'd forgotten it. As the sun went down, shadows stretched over the little stone, wrapping it in darkness against the sun-warmed sand.
