“What’s your name, stranger?”

“Zander Tristram.” The lie rolled off his tongue with the experience of a well trained bandit. Alec had used so many aliases in the past eleven years it felt as if each one of them had their own personalities in the back of his mind.

“Well, Mr. Tristram, we seem to be in a bit of a stalemate. Especially since it would be downright cruel of me to send a demon hellspawn back out there to freeze to death. Whatever the hell you are, I don't want that on my conscience.”

The corner of his eye twitched at the insult, but he stayed silent. It was not the first time he’d been called some monstrous things, but it was starting to grate on his nerves.

“Ma’am, I don’t mean to presume your skill with that gun and I’d very much rather not get shot, but I grew up in Texas - if I’d been hunting you, you’d be dead already.”

She cocked a brow, slowly lowering the gun until the heel rested on her hip. “A little egotistical, aren’t you?”

Alec let some of a facade slowly trickle away. He sighed, letting his arms drop. “It’d take more effort than I’m willing to put into right now, believe me. Like I said, I’m not a big fan of getting shot, either." Alec's hands moved to rest at his waist as she reached for the lantern. She was shorter than him by at least a foot, but her temper tonight had proven rather intimidating.

“I’ll take that,” She held out her free hand to him, “If I let you in my house, I’m keeping the guns.”

Alec frowned at her, but obliged, unbuckling his gun belt, slipping the rifle off his back with it. “Are all you Canadian’s this paranoid with people you don’t know?”

She took both, tossing the belt over one shoulder, “Only about strangers with glowing eyes and pointed teeth.”

“They don’t glow,” He informed her, hotly. “They refract.”

“And there’s a difference, eh?”

“I’m not a lamp post.” His frown deepened.

They stared at one another for a long while before she finally gave up, they both were unavoidably tired and getting on each other’s nerves. Things would surely look different in the morning.
