Suess clawed her way up the sheer, snow covered cliff face. Her paw pads had been rubbed raw from the sharp stones and ice that covered the ridge of elders, silently thinking to herself that the elders certainly wouldn’t have been climbing up any of these ridges without a clear, defined path lined with only the plushest of rugs made from hand plucked angel feathers. Not that she would say any of that, this was a sacred place, and as tired and cold as she was, she would not desecrate the holy land with her bemoaning.
Her breath fogged the air around her as she heaved herself up the final ledge, sitting back in the snow for a moment as she just looked down at the vastness of the land around her. The peaks of the Ridge of Elders circled her, reaching up, beyond her into the sky. Thankfully, the storm that had made her initial ascent so torturous, had cleared, leaving only the dark endless sky speckled with stars spread out before her, not a cloud in the sky. Suess sat there in silence for a long while, not really sure what to do next. She had been sent here to meet Aippaq. Naturally, she had found this to be more metaphorical; climb the scary sharp mountain, meditate or something, climb down and return to the elders. Suess wasn’t exactly the meditative type, but she also was not too keen to just start making her way down. The way up had been long and cold, and she did not really want to start that whole trek again. So she just, sat. Not really expecting anything, or waiting on anything, just appreciating the view, which really was lovely, and taking a much-needed break. Until she saw him.
Suddenly, she found herself staring out at the bright light of the auroras, spirally across the sky like unraveled ribbons of blues and greens, brushing the mountain peaks with the long tethers. The face of a large, dire tokotas appeared in the lights, their eyes shifting downwards towards the toki, who suddenly felt very, very small.
“Hello, child,” the voice echoed across through the steep valley, filling the dark voids with warm, bright light. It did not take Suess long to figure out exactly what she was seeing. “You have struggled, and fought, and have reached my peaks. In exchange, I shall gift you with what you seek.”
Suess blinked in surprise, shocked silence. Aippaq watched her expectantly, but still, she could not find anything to say, let along ask for something. After several, too long, moments of silence, she found her voice.
“Oh, I don’t want anything.” She barked, so baffled by the offer she was not even sure what would be worth asking for. She had no need for healing, or power, or knowledge. Suess was perfectly content with what she had. Aippaq chuckled, a warm, though surprising sound that filled the sharp peaks with a softness that surprised her.
“Then may you always find adventure, in even the little places. May you always be surprised.” And with a final smile, Aippaq faded out, along with the bright auroras, leaving the little toki still shaken, and now in the dark.
