Description

Decided to do a quick Spectrum Meme for my Martian character, just cuz!

Sex: Sarmaks are asexual creatures that lack any and all reproductive organs.

Gender: Although this race does refer to each other with the default "he", they don't have any actual gender identity. Our Explorer does not care what pronouns you use to describe him, whether him, her, it, they, *insert alien term for other genders here*, etc.

Build: Like the rest of his race, our Explorer is no light-weight. Even on his homeworld, his kind are among the heavier and bulkier species.

Height: While his size on Earth is nothing to sneeze at, being the size of a bear, on Mars he’s even taller and more intimidating as he can stand upright on his tentacles. His height varies because of this, reaching around 8’ tall maximum.

Handedness: He has tentacles, lots of them. While he doesn’t prefer any particular side as both left and right bundles of tentacles are equally capable, his two front-most tentacles are often held off the ground; he uses these as his hands, although he’ll employ his other tentacles if need be.

Physical Ability: On Mars and on Earth, his race are not creatures you would want to tussle with, as their multiple tentacles and heavy bulk make them dangerous foes. The tentacles in particular are all muscle and very strong, grip-wise; once they get a hold of you, it’s difficult to free yourself and you’re pretty much a goner. Their lifting strength, however, is not great and because of this, they rely heavily on technology to do heavy manual work and on Earth, their meager lifting strength render them incapable of pushing their own bodies off the ground!

Intelligence: This species is EXTREMELY intelligent, the most intelligent race in our solar-system and perhaps the galaxy. They’re almost all brain, with the rest of their bodies being the absolute minimum needed to survive. When the Global Mass Extinction of Mars began, the Sarmaks were forced to develop their brain or die out. The end result is a cool, calculating mind so advanced that even newly-budded young can stand on even ground with their elders.

Wisdom, Cleverness: Alongside intelligence, our Explorer has been around the block for quite some time. Even from the moment of birth, he’s inherited some of the memories and experiences of his parent and grandparent and so on. He built on this with his own unique life-experiences, traveling to planets far and wide and gaining wisdom as he did so. He’s also incredibly clever, using his superior intellect to manipulate and outsmart the “lesser creatures” he’s met in his journey.

Education: Whilst Sarmaks don’t exactly have schools, they do receive specialized training for their chosen role in life. Most of his childhood was spent with intense exercises to ready him for the various environments of other worlds.

Social Ability: Sarmaks are naturally social creatures and our Explorer is no exception. They work extremely well with others of their own kind and although they’re not exactly hive-minded, they are remarkably coordinated with each other even from a distance. Traveling to other worlds, our Sarmak spends a good portion of his adult life away from other Sarmaks and he does feel pangs of loneliness when he’s isolated on a foreign planet (although he ignores this feeling as it does not benefit his mission). He will be social towards other species when he has to, although he inwardly prefers to keep interaction with these lesser creatures to a minimum.

Perceptiveness: Sarmaks are very in-tuned with the minds of other Sarmaks, as well as other creatures. Given that they communicate telepathically, they maintain a mental link with those around them. Although not mind readers, this link does allow them to sense the emotions of other species, even when they don’t exactly understand the unique body language/expressions/verbal communication that accompanies said emotions. For example, our Sarmak can understand when a Human is happy or sad, even if he doesn’t understand what it means when you smile or cry. This proves a very helpful trait for his line of work.

Readability: … That said, it’s not exactly a two-way street. While our Explorer is easy for other Sarmaks to read, to other species he may appear completely emotionless. Their emotions are expressed mostly through vocalizations and very subtle cues of their tentacles, and through a mental link. When it comes to other species, our Explorer may choose to communicate his emotions through this link, but most of the time he doesn’t and this can make it very difficult to tell what exactly is going on in that mind of his and his true intentions very difficult to detect.

Intro-Extrovert: Given that he’s alone most of the time, our Sarmak has learned to adopt a more introverted lifestyle. Away from his species, he prefers to keep to himself and do his own thing without detection until the time is right. When forced to interact peacefully with the natives, he prefers to restrict his contact to a select few individuals and tends to stay out of the native people's social activities, instead choosing to observe from the sidelines. He expresses reluctance when the “lesser creatures” tries to involve him but will eventually relent if they persist to pacify them.

Gender Appearance: I think Sarmaks look more male than female.

Sexuality: Asexual reproduction is the dominant means to procreate on Mars and Sarmaks are of no exception. They lack sexual organs and have no sexual drive whatsoever…

Romanticism: … As a result, they have no romantic feelings whatsoever…

Romantic? : … And seem to have very little understanding of the courtship behavior of other species. Indeed they do not care about courtship at all and should a lesser creature, for some reason (no judgement), wish to court THEM of all things, expect no response of either rejection or acceptance.

Affectionate: Sarmaks are not snuggly creatures. Cuddling and shows of physical affection is not a part of Sarmak vocabulary. Our Explorer would prefer you not snuggle with him and would move away on your first few attempts. Be persistent however and our Explorer will give up and allow you to cuddle. Just make sure you don't make him feel threatened in the process as he will be very on edge and will lash out if you do something fishy.

Disposition (outward AND inward) : This is a fun one! One of our Explorer’s job is to befriend the native peoples of a given planet and study their ways from the inside of their society. He will act with great benevolence and will appear to be your best friend evar!! But alas, on the inside he’s anything but. His friendship with a lesser creature like you is not genuine and he is in fact using you as a means to an end to complete his mission. He sees you as inferior and when the time comes where he inevitably betrays you, he will coax you and several others of your kind to join him on a journey of a lifetime to other planets… Yeah, it’s a trap and he actually intends to feed off you and your comrades during the journey…

Petty? : Pettiness is seen as a trait of inferior creatures and our Explorer does not argue over trivial things nor does he hold grudges against you about things that don’t even matter.

Sane? : Sanity is essential in Sarmak society. One of the first things a bud goes through upon meeting the Elders is a brief scan to make sure the child’s brain is not defective. Should sanity be lost through whatever unfortunate circumstances life throws, the Sarmak in question will be deemed "malfunctioning" and killed for the good of the species.

Friendliness: Our Sarmak holds great respect and professionalism with others of his own kind and as stated above, he will feign friendliness with other species. It is extremely hard to earn this Sarmak’s genuine respect if you’re a lesser creature, but if you somehow manage to achieve this by some miracle, know that it’s a lifelong bond.

Stoic? : Our Explorer is quite stoic. With such advances in their medical technologies, pain is not really much of an issue as it can be fixed quite easily, but even when he is forced to endure it long-term, he does so quietly and without complaint.

Graceful? : This is not a strong point for any Sarmak, even on Mars. They’re just too bulky for graceful movement.

Stubborn? : Our Explorer can be a little bit stubborn and holds firm to his ideas except when they contradict that of the Elders, in which case, he will follow their orders. With lesser creatures, good luck trying to change his mind and don’t even try to if it has to do with mission-related stuff because it’s not going to happen.

Courageous? : Our Explorer is naturally cautious and will only take bold risks if he absolutely has to for the sake of the mission or of his survival. He weighs the risks and benefits extremely carefully and always calculates the best course of action in any situation; he’s not afraid of looking “cowardly” as in the end, he always makes it work in his favor.

Loyal? : Our Explorer is extremely loyal to his race and his superiors. He constantly puts his life on the line visiting other worlds for the good of his species, and will happily die doing what he feels is right. When it comes to lesser creatures on the other hand… like friendship, he’ll feign loyalty and will actually go to some lengths to show this devotion. However, if it endangers his life, mission, or when he doesn’t need you anymore, that loyalty is severed quite heartlessly.

Lawfulness: He follows Sarmak law of course and will try to follow the laws of the native peoples if he can. Best not to cause trouble, after all. The exception is when he's in a dire situation, like murdering someone if he’s starving to death.

Attitude: Being an Explorer working for the future survival of his entire race, it helps to be on the optimistic side. There’s a suitable planet to live on somewhere and his race will continue to thrive. No matter how long or how tedious the journey is, failure and giving up is not an option!!
