I drew this to practice drawing characters with smaller eyes. He ended up looking better with my usual eye style though, haha, so... mission failed? I'll try again another time.Related content

I think this is a promising experiment and you shouldn't give up. The main problem isn't the eye but the transition from the area above eye through the eyebrow. I think bushier eyebrows and a smoother transition from the top of the eye through and over the brow ridge would make the eye more expressive and look less like it'd been artificially shrunk and set back.
Hard line eyebrows work for big-eyed, more cartoony characters, but I think if you move to more realistic eyes you need to add more detail and attention to the bony structures around them (like the brow ridge and zygomatic/cheek bone) and how the skin (and fur) moves over them. I think that is what lets you make realistic-eyed characters as expressive as cartoon-eyed characters.

Actually, this sketch headshot you did looks rather impressive! Compared to your other sketches, a bit more detail with black and white value seems to be added, which adds a nice shadow effect in areas like the eyes! It really does look as if your sketches are evolving into something greater!
