"What's wrong dear?" Giselle asks her granddaughter.
Shrugging; "I just wish I could learn more fairy magic." Tabitha tells her.
"You learned how to make fairy sleep dust." Giselle reminds her.
"Ya, but every fairy can do that." Tabitha says; "I can't even make myself fairy sized."
"Like I told you at the beginning dear, you're only a quarter fairy; so we can't expect you to be able to gain all the fairy powers." Giselle reminds her.
"Ya, but we've tried every other fairy magic, and I can't do any of em." Tabitha says pouting.
"Tabitha Ann, you stop pouting this instant." Giselle says sharply; "Your wings have grown back, better than ever. Which is more than you had when I brought you here. So stop looking only at the negative. The expression on your face makes you look like a shrew!"
Laughing with her grandmother; "Ok grandma." Tabitha says; "But isn't there any other fairy magic I could try?"
"Well; there is one more." Giselle admits; "But I have to tell you that it's pretty uncommon even among fairies. I'm the only one in the village that can do it."
"What is it?" Tabitha asks excitedly.
"It's summoning a protector." Giselle explains. "Some fairies are so in tune with nature that they can summon an animal to protect them in time of need. But it's always just one species of animal. I've met other fairies that could summon squirrels, or ferrets; I even met one that could summon a badger. I'm even rare among those with the gift; I can summon canines. Not just one species of canine, but any dog, or fox, or even wolf that are nearest to me will come when I need it to. But it's only one animal, and it only stays for a short time; usually until whatever is threatening the fairy is gone. That's why it's called summoning a protector."
"Well I'm not doing anything, so lets get started!" Tabitha says, suddenly excited again.
"Hold on dear;" Giselle says cautiously; "First off we'll have to go someplace else, like near the waterfall. We can't just have some animal trotting over the village now can we? And the other thing is, you'll have to be your normal size to do it. There can't be any other fairy magic effecting you, or the magic won't work."
"Oh, ok." Tabitha says agreeably; "Well then, let's give it a shot."
