Description

We need to talk about Frank Cho. Frank Cho comes from webcomics (Liberty Meadows) and in the aughts he was one in high demand for superhero comics. He had a good idea of anatomy, an understanding of musculature and a thing for drawing big booties. All of this exploded in 2015, when he drew a sketch cover of Spider-Gwen in a sexualized pose . This set the internet aflame and soon only the loudest voices were left, either declaring that this was an artist drawing "kiddie porn" (since Gwen in the comic was not yet 18) or that this was "a very important free speech issue". Any actual debate to be had why the sexualization of underage characters could be a bad thing (& this has been standard in the comics book industry) was quickly drowned out by noise. Sadly, Frank Cho himself threw himself into this with gusto and he has since embraced the persona of the cancelled free speech warrior who now is mostly known for drawing Outrage Covers which consist of two jokes: "Woman's butt is too big" and "woman has big boobs".

Anyway, it's a bit of a shame that he pissed away any goodwill left, because he was an artist with a unique and often attractive art style. The legs on his She-Hulk are a bit much for me, but I like her expression and general look. (However: Look at that stumpy sword she's got in her left hand.) I'll probably post a few Frank Cho croppings in the next few weeks and I'll try to stay away from the outrage discussion after this. Cropped and upscaled from an original panel in Hulk (Vol. 2, #9).
