The titular Beast of Darkling Woods. His real name is a mystery for now.
Hailing from a world that is basically every YA novel dystopian world, he is a lad acquainted with misery for as long as he could remember and he doesn't even remember much of his life before living in captivity and being subjected to daily experiments. One day, everything just went dark and foggy and there was a gentle voice saying something to him but the only thing he could make out was the phrase "Live and be happy." Next thing he knows, he is lying next to some sort of tree house in a small meadow surrounded by tall, imposing trees and that is where his life in this other world begins.
As far as the residents of this world are concerned, he simply appeared one day in Darkling Woods, claimed a spot as his territory and has been living there since.
Also yeah he can turn into that big thing. Why? It is because of all the experiments he was subjected to during his time in captivity. It wasn't the intended result but it is welcome nonetheless.
Do note that this is subject to change. I'm still figuring this out.
