Although I could be wrong somewhere, there's an old myth that goes that if a mermaid wants to marry you, she offers you her comb. Taking it turns said mermaid into a human. Then you gotta keep the comb away from her as far as possible, because if she finds that comb, she's back to being a mermaid again.
As a member of the D***** Renaissance generation, I never believed that. Neither does Bell here. Also, in my world, mermaids can't turn into humans.
Tulip found that comb. She thinks it's cute. Bell disagrees.

UPDATE (3/11/19): I stand corrected: the humans just take the comb from the mermaid and keep it away from them as long as possible.
