Hi everyone,
this is my little tutorial how you can make your own Sailorfuku school uniform. Since many people want to know how you can make this basic kind of school uniform I tried my best to make one for U I searched in the internet before but I couln't fnd a guide that was very helpfull for me so I tried to make my own guide. English is my second language so I hope you'll understand my writing
In this tutorial I'm using the example of the character Yandere-chan from the game Yandere Simulator.
First I'm going to talk a little about how Yandere chans uniform works.
Her top has no buttons or a zip so we obviously will make a top we have to put on by pulling it over our head She has a seam going down the middle of her back. Her top is not fittet on her waist so we will sew some darts in her bust area so it fitts better around your body shape. On her arms she has these sleevebands that are attached in the inside of the sleeve and folded around the sleeves edge. Her sleeve has 1 or 2 white stripes (you can decide if you want to give her one or two because both versions exsist (see photos). She has a sailor collar with only one stripe attached in the inside of the blouse and a red scarf thing going all the way around her neck ending in the back into a little triangle shape. In the front they are hold together with a blue band. She has this little pocket thing onto her chest. I still work on that, so I didn't sew it yet into my costume.^^
What you need:
-2m white fabric
-1 m dark blue fabric
-white bias (iron on bias tape) 0,5 cm (0.19 inch wide)
-sewingmachine
-overlocker (optional but I recommend it)
-thread in red, blue and white
-fabric marker
-ruler (optional)
-fabric scissors
-needles for fixing
-iron
I use a pattern for making the uniform. I would recommend you to buy one, because you don't waste time with making your own. You can still make your own but if you are new to sewing, I would recommend you using a pattern. You can buy them in the internet or in your local sewing shop. I sew once a sailorfuku for my Kanae without one but I can highly recommend a pattern.
I'm using this pattern for her top. It's a normal pattern for a not fittet V-neck with short sleeves. I used a different sleeve for her but you can use any short sleeve you want. You can use those little 2 pieces in the photo too but I didn't need them so we only need here the 2 big pieces and the sleeve (picture). Start with cutting out the pattern pieces in the right size.
I started attaching the pattern pieces with needles onto my fabric. As you can see I shortened the 2 bigger pieces 2 times in the middle by creating two foldings. You don't need to do that but it saves fabric.
You need to fold your fabric before in a double-layer. Place here the front part at the folded edge that you get a whole front piece and not just a half.
Cut all your pieces out. Leave the pattern pieces attached on the fabric!!
On your pattern are little triangles and circles with numbers on them. The numbers are your sizes. If you are a size 10 then you need all the triangles and points with the number 10. These are connecting points. We need to mark them clearly.
I'm using a special fabric pen. You can buy those in your local sewing store or in the internet. You just need a drop of water and the colour is away. Those pens are magic and I prefer them more than chalk.
Mark all your points on the fabric. You have to mark the point on both layers of the fabric jsut like this:
Here I sew once around the v-neck collar that the edge stays nice and when you wear it, your V stays in place around your neck and looks nice and neat.
Just use a normal stich and sew once along the V.
Here I sew one of the darts. The darts have a regular long-triangular shape. Just fold your fabric from your big front piece on the marked points for the dart on the breast by taking the points together to create a fold and sew along the points. Then iron your fold. Do this on the left and on the right side.
Next is your back piece. You have noe two bakc pieces, left and right. Because Yandere chan has a seam on the middle of her back. Take both pieces and pin them together and sew them together. Now you have a big back piece with a seam in the middle.
Pin back piece and front piece together at the sides and the shoulders. It's normal that you back piece is a little lager because your back is konvex. Sew the sides and shoulders together with a normal stich.
Now we need to make the sleeves.
Cut the sleeves out. Sew along the upper round edge with the normal stich just like we did it with the V to get the round shape of the sleeve touching the shoulder. I overlocked the long side with an overlocker and white thread.
Like that
Sew every sleeve together on the edges. Now you have something like that (photo).
That is the way you have to pin the sleeve into the sleeve hole:
1.) Tourn the sleeve around that the pretty side is facing outside.
2.) Tourn the top around that the ugly side is facing outside.
3.) Put the sleeve insode the top and pin it together with the sleeve hole like on the photo.
Sew this together and pull the sleeve out. Now you can take an unpicker and unpick the stiching from before:
This here. You don't need it anymore since you already formed the sleeve and sew it on.
Next we make the sleevebands. You need to make them the lengh of the sleeve and 9cm high.
But the pattern piece for the sleeve again on the fabric (this time the blue one). The fabric has to be double layered, exactly like in the photo. Cut out a rectangular shaped piece.
It will look like this. If you unfold it, it would be a square. Do this 2 times until you have two pieces like the one on the photo.
Again how you have to messure it: 9cm high x lengh of your bottom sleeve
Overlock the pieces.
Mine look like this.
Sew each together on the edges (1.5 cm away from the edge).
Then sew the short edges together from each sleeve.
You'll get two of these.
Put the ugly edge of the sleeveband against the edge of the sleeve you put on your top before and pin them together. Sew them together and fold the sleeveband around that it hides the stiching you just did. No take a piece of white bias and iron it onto the blue sleeveband. Yandere chan is not waering the white stripe in the middle of the blue band, but a little further down that you almost can't see it.
1.) Fixing it with pins THIS way. 2.) Ugly side inside, pretty side outside. (Pretty side is the side where the double layered fabric is folded) 3.) Sew it together and flip the blue thing over 4.) It hides the stiching.
Pretty ey <3
I use my iron-on bias on the blue fabric.
Mine looks like this. I like to have my Laptop with some pics on it next to me while I'm working.
Next let's do the sailor collar.
I used a pattern for it but I changed the shape and adjusted it on my blouse.
This step now is only if you want to adjust a pattern to the rest of the costume and you don't have the final pattern and need to change it first:
Please.....use if you don't know exactly how to change the pattern when you sew the first piece of the collar a piece of old fabric or newpaper. In my case I used my blue fabric because I have too much of it. But I needed to make the pattern longer so I did 3 collars in the end: 1 wrong one and 2 right ones.
1.) I put my pattern on and cut my shape out (this has the shape of the pattern)
2.) The shape is wrong but I didn't want to cut in my pattern so use old fabric for the first try.
3.) I could see that my shape was too short by holding it onto my blouse.
4.) I placed the piece on the blue fabric and drew with chalk around it and added missing areas and cut it out again until it fit onto my blouse shape. (Use old fabric if you are not sure. As I mentioned I had 2 much blue fabric so I jsut used that.
5.) With the final piece I was satified and I could use it to cut out my final two collar pieces.
Fast sketch.
Collar:
Fold the blue fabric that it's double layered. Pin the pattern on it. Draw around it with chalk. But wait, there is a special way to fold the fabric. The shorter edge of the pattern has to be on the foldline of the blue fabric. (the ''pretty edge'')
You'll get this. Do this twice.
Like this! On the right side you can see the fold of the blue fabric. When you unfold the lue fabric now, you'll get this:
In the end you got this twice.
Now we have to adjust it on the blouse edge where we want to sew the collar on.
As you can see I took a little more fabric away that it fits my blouse.
Now I'm sewing the edges together. Leave the side open that you will attach later on the shirt.
You get this thing, that looks like a little bag
Don't forget to iron the collar that the edges are nice and neat.
Next step is attaching the collar to the top.
Pin the collar like that on the shirt and sew it together.
From the inside it looks like this.
Fold the collar over and iron it, that it stays in place.
Now take 3 strips of bias and iron them on the edge of the collar like it is shown on the ingame picture and like we did before on the sleeve.
Now let's do her scarf
Depending on your character and what you like you have to make a bow or scarf for your sailorfuku. I just cut out a pieve of red fabric in the shape of an V or U. The triangle shape is on the back and the ends make the bow in the front. Just experiemnt around, like me
To fix both ends into a bow I made a little round ''thing'' out of the blue fabric.
Take a long rectangle shape of the blue fabric and sew 2 edges together, then turn it inside out. Sew the short ends together and you get this little ''fabric ring''. All you have to do is to put the scarf ends through this ring.
Fold the collar over and iron it, that it stays in place.
Next we gonna do the little triangle she has between the collar on the left and right side.
Cut out a shape looking like this:
Sew around the upper edge.
Take a piece of bias and cut it into 2 strips.
Iron these on the seam you just created to hide it.
Pin the triangle in the V-neck ''place''.
And we are finished )
Now you are ready to get senpai's ass hahahaha <3
I hope you understood the most of this little tutorial. It was more experimenting so I hope you understood my writing XD
