Slegelse is a mining settlement located along the islands surrounding Mount Pyrophasma. It is owned by Zareen Kingdom, though some say the Damijan are the true puppet masters of the whole operation. The grunt workers who mine the valuable pyre crystals are primarily Dwarven and Damijan felons. They are subject to dangerous conditions, exposed to toxic smog, extreme heat, high tides, angry fire nymphs, and a small but active and eternally-spewing volcano. These workers mine crystals, tend to on-site refineries, haul cargo to and from ships, and work grueling hours every day. The average prisoner may spend 1-3 months at Slegelse before returning to a prison in Zareen Kingdom, but many don't even survive their stay.

Not all criminals at Slegelse are sent against their will. They are paid for their efforts, and while it's still a pittance, it's far above what they'd earn in their homeland prison. Those who survive return to prison "rich". Not all workers on Slegelse are criminals either; non-felons receive loads of gold as overseers. Many only have to work a couple of months to earn a year's worth of income.

Pyre crystals grow from the bones of dead fire nymphs. They can be found almost anywhere, but Mount Pyrophasma proves to be the only consistent source with such a high concentration. The volcano is called a "Nymph Grinder" by workers, and for good reason...Pyriads are born from its magma, and after they claw their way out of the rocks, many end up tumbling down into the sea. The water extinguishes the fire nymphs and washes their corpses to shore, where crystals begin to grow from them. These crystals are used for a variety of purposes worldwide. They can be used as a spell ingredient, medicine, and energy source among other things. Almost all of the pyre crystals on the market are sourced from Slegelse.

The crystals have a unique effect on Damijan people. When ground up and snorted, the powder causes euphoria, followed by a harsh energy-crash. When snorted by any other race, it only causes severe burns. Pyre powder is known to be addictive and has become a rampant problem in some parts of Damijana. While the crystals themselves are not illegal, owning powder is considered a crime punishable by banishment to the source: Slegelse. One snort can land a Damijan in the mines for a month.
