Because I have no formal training, I find it very hard to draw something that is technically flawless and looks lively. It's usually one or the other.

It is a very hard line to walk and I have the same problem. (Although I do have some training so I don't really have an excuse). If I need stuff to look lively I nearly always just say "fuck it" and give them hosepipe limbs.
