Description *phew*

OK, so this piece was inspired by Libba Bray's 'Gemma Doyle Trilogy' and was made specifically for a contest hosted on her blog.

While this is not a depicition of any actual scene, what I was trying to capture was what Felicity (the girl in the dress) feels about the loss of Pippa.

And if nothing else, this piece has helped me get over my fear of poofy dresses.

Tried some new techniques with shattered glass which I have never attempted before, plus a bit of experimenting with dramatic lighting.

**Tools used**
Photoshop CS2
WACOM Graphire

Time taken: about 15 hours

wow this is amazing, I think Felicity the character that sees the most sadness and confusion and you really feel for her through the story. Great pic I love it

Quite possibly one of the most impressive pieces I've ever seen from you man. The texturing is well done as it's there but subtle and doesn't grab your attention which is a massive win! The shattered glass looks great and the girls pose and clothing is just perfect. I see someone's loosing their fear of the hard brush

Yeah, I hardly use the soft brushes anymore at all now, even for blending . It was one of those "bad habits" I was telling Rochelle about; you two have really helped me break those

Wow Amazing job! The dress is beautifully detailed And all that glass I like the design of the room as well^^

I don't know if it depends on how the glass is cracked, but to me, it seems like the parts of the reflection that are along some of the cracks would be slightly off set? Dunno if that made senseXD Might depend on the severity of the crack?

Otherwise, it's absolutely awesome! Good luck with the contest

Thank you ^^

Yeah i admit I didn't even think about refraction with the broken glass, I'm not even sure how I would have attempted it

lovely work, major props on all the details. The dark purple dress looks lovely.

Considering you've never done shattered glass before (neither have I, actually) it turned out quite nice. The only suggestion I have is to maybe make the smaller pieces that are further away more transparent. It kinda looks more like gauze or organza in some parts where it's really clumped together, if that makes sense

Good luck in the contest!

Yeah absolutely, if you have photoshop or anything, try to clean it up just a bit. But I think you should enter it, definitely.

Thanks

I'll just have to do a better scan, I don't have photoshop and can't run GIMP at the moment.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Absolutely beautiful! The lighting, expression, and the broken glass all help me to understand what the girl in the dress is feeling in this picture. Great Job!

Wow, this amazing work my friend, you sure put a lot of effort into the details and it was worth it. The theme might be a sad one, but it's really beautifully expressed

wow Brian this is wonderful. really interesting piece. Since this is for a contest i wont give you a crit on it.
The dress is beautiful, you really captured the intricacy of the period (gothic era?) dress, either one it looks stunning. Poofy dresses have no reason to cause you fear hehe, dresses are fun to draw and paint and you did exceptionally well.

The lighting and the glass looks great , adds alot of atmosphere to the painting and the background is one of the best I have seen you do.. because it is sharp and in focus with texture, alot of your b/gs so far have been a bit blurry and soft but this one really grabs the eye.

Great work.

Thank you so much

I was really proud of this one once it was finished, I may do some more like it. I had a lot of fun painting the dress, and probably won't avoid them like the plague anymore.

Amazing! The dark purple dress is beautifully designed. Is that a mirror or a painting? Either way, this looks awesome!

It's supposed to be a mirror but I couldn't quite shake the portarit look of it either

Thanks for taking time to look at it ^^
