He spent years struggling to make a living, taking a variety of odd jobs until he finally received a great opportunity. Lazarus Corporation, a large industrial and technological company located in Guardian City, was looking for experienced pilots to test various projects. On a whim, Travis left his Florida home for Guardian City.

With hopeful enthusiasm, Travis was able to prove that his skills would be beneficial to Lazarus Corporation by showing off his remarkable talents within the cockpit of their experimental test plane. After witnessing his abilities, Lazarus Corporation hired the young pilot immediately. The generous company provided housing, and first months advanced pay to the struggling pilot to help ensure that his transition to Guardian City would be as easy as possible.

As the months passed Travis proved himself to Lazarus Corporation time and time again, even garnering an array of flight awards and invites to the type of airshows he enjoyed as a child. When Lazarus Corporation needed a skilled pilot to test fly their highly experimental nano nuclear flight pack their first choice was Travis. When they notified him of their decision, Travis was elated to discover that it would be him that would be able to break new ground in aerodynamics. Piece by piece the scientists placed the bodysuit, flight pack, and wrist gauntlets on Travis' body. To him it felt like a badge of honor. Soaring into the clouds Travis felt a power he never experienced in his life, it was as if he had become a living god. The thrill of flying without the use of a plane was intoxicating, it was everything he had dreamed about as a child and more.

A few weeks into testing, tragedy would strike. It is unclear as to how, though later investigations pointed to industrial espionage, one of the engine's safety seals broke loose. The following day as he ignited the pack to begin his test flight the engine erupted into flame, knocking Travis unconscious and engulfing his body in intense heat. Travis was rushed to the hospital with severe burns all over his body leaving him horribly disfigured. Travis spent weeks in a coma.

Having heard of of the accident, Lazarus Corporation's owner, Solomon Lazarus, not wanting any sort of negative publicity or exposure, immediately shut down and halted financing towards the flight pack division and reassigned all researchers and developers to other projects. Once he had awakened from his coma several days afterwards, Travis learned of his apparent termination, along with the knowledge of his disfiguration.The news devastated him, sending him into a rage. Travis saw his life in shambles, and decided that someone had to pay. He believed it should be Lazarus Corporation and those who were directly involved with the project.

Travis began concocting a plan to get his revenge using the very weapon that had destroyed his life, but this time he would use it to start anew. As he regained his strength, Travis fled from the hospital and made his way to the now closed Lazarus Corporation facility that housed the experimental flight packs. Gaining access to the facility he savagely attacked and murdered several security guards taking with him their key cards. Tucked away in one of the vaults was his destiny.

Travis placed himself within the newly modified bodysuit christening himself Meltdown. Over the following weeks Meltdown hunted his prey one by one, executing those involved with the project with a ruthless ferocity. Travis felt the only true way to fulfill his vengeance was to destroy the sole owner of Lazarus Corporation, Solomon Lazarus. During a charity event hosted by Solomon, Meltdown forced his way in blasting wildly with his gauntlets. Unknown to Meltdown, was that She-Cat was in attendance as a guest, suspiciously watching Solomon Lazarus. She-Cat engaged Meltdown in brutal combat with the two landing devastating blows upon one another. Fortunately She-Cat was able to gain the upper hand and managed to subdue Meltdown before anymore damage could be done, handing him over to authorities. Several months later Meltdown managed to escape the confines of Irongate prison focusing his deranged rage on She-Cat for humiliating him and taking away his opportunity for revenge.
