Description
The GCR Class 13 (LNER X4) was a class of 6 4-2-2s built in 1900 to the design of Harry Pollitt. They were originally built to work express trains on the then newly opened London Extension but by 1904 they had all been transferred to work trains between Liverpool & Manchester. All six of the class were withdrawn between 1923 & 1927In 1911 JG Robinson would rebuild one the class, #969 with the same design of boiler used on his 11B "Improved Director" 4-4-0s. In 1915 it would be rebuilt again, reverting to it's original boiler but would now be fitted with a superheater.
