If you can't tell, I did work on the tail. It was patched with the green of grass, so I had to erase most of it and smudge it back in...

I wish I could say I did - I didn't see the class that he was in, only the supreme championships and you couldn't hear much anyway. (Hence the reason I called the photo 'coloured' so no one could say that I was wrong! xD) Someone has refered to him as a draft before now though.

He looks like a Gypsy Vanner. I'd love a Vanner, but I don't know of any studs in Australia and I don't really want to risk an import. Imported horses brought EI into Aus. and we don't want it back again, so I'm not too sure about importing, but given the money and time to wait for quarantine, I'd have one like a shot. Except that I want to compete in showjumping, and I've never heard of a draft doing well in that field. Thus, my best horse would likely be a warmblood or similar.

I love warmbloods. I've contacted two people about their horses, both of which are bay Thoroughbred geldings, but if neither of those happen, I might end up getting a warmblood in the end. There are a couple that look likely, but warmbloods are so expensive.

Not all horses are expensive, but to get a good quality, experienced showjumper or eventer, it's a lot of money. And you have to be really careful, because some people sedate their horses so that they seem all gentle and lovely but then after you've bought them and taken them home they're vicious. I turn up 15 minutes early. Sometimes I also ask if I can just turn up any time of the day, which is a good way to keep a dishonest seller in the dark about when you'll be at their property/the horse's agistment place.
Around my area, there are some decent horses for sale for as little as AU$500, but none of them have the experience I need or they're too old for what I want. And there are a few free horses, but again, they're either too old or too inexperienced. You just need to know what you want.
For pleasure riding, nothing beats Standardbreds for cheap, good horses, but I would never jump one, because pacing is incredibly dangerous if you're jumping, and even if a Standardbred "doesn't pace", they will if you push them hard enough. So if you just want a pleasure horse, you can pick up standardbreds for nothing at certain times of year.
But if you can't afford vet bills, which are so damned expensive now, then I would recommend waiting until you can.

That pretty much is the problem, I am sure I could manage the initial cost of one, it is just that livery here in England is ridiculous - the prices are sky high and with the weather being bad pretty much all the time the costs continue to increase.

ImmortalShande In reply to The-strawberry-tree [2008-10-19 23:55:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it's pretty bad in Australia too. I know someone who was forced to pay AU$500 per week to board her colt, but that was because he was entire and it can be difficult to find property owners who'll have an ungelded horse on their land. The cheapest agistment in my local area is AU$15 per week, which isn't too bad, but it's in an area where there are lots of aggressive snakes.
I'm lucky in that my family has been offered free agistment if we find our ideal horse. Our problem is vet bills, shoeing and the cost of the actual horse. And I would most likely have my horse shod, because I'm planning on showjumping, which is AU$50 or $60 every six weeks, possibly more expensive now because that was over four years ago and vet bills/agistment have gone up since, so why the heck not farrier bills?
Some stables will allow discounts for work. Perhaps you could ask around and find out if there are any in your area.
The biggest problem with horse people is that most of the time horses are either over rugged or under rugged. Over rugging is the more cruel of the two, in my opinion, because it's good for a horse to be cold every now and then. I mean, in snow putting a rug on would be a good thing, but if it's hot, you can imagine how uncomfortable it would be.

The-strawberry-tree In reply to ImmortalShande [2008-10-20 09:25:21 +0000 UTC]
It's such an expensive industry! The problem you may also find with a 'showjumping' type is that they very easily go lame the finer built they are and I guess one thing could quickly lead to another and you are once more forking out money.
Agree with the rug thing but then there is a horse at the yard I ride at and he suffers from sweet itch, for a while they did not have a rug and despite the amount of spray and fly repellant stuff they used he would come in from the field with lumps and his tail was rubbed raw. So I guess it worked out better for him having a rug as it is rarely exceptionally hot as I guess it can be Australia. Another issue I have with actually owning a horse is that it would be shared between my Mum, younger sister and myself thus it would be better to be a cob with the added factor that it would be our first horse. I am not the greatest fan of cobs regardless of how safe most of them are! I am not asking for one that I would get sacred of riding or that will put me at risk but like you said about the Gypsy Vanner there is a limit on the different activities you can do with it.

ImmortalShande In reply to The-strawberry-tree [2008-10-20 09:43:59 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the local horse that I really want is a bay warmblood so he's not hugely fine boned (did I tell you he was a TB? XD meh bad) and his price is very negotiable, which means I might not have to pay the ten grand they're asking for him.
Mmm, with sweet itch it can be an idea to keep them indoors, especially at night, because I think it's a reaction to midge saliva.
In Australia, heck yeah. Even in my area, which is fairly mild, it can get to nearly 40 degrees C.
A Welsh Cob or Welsh Pony of Cob Type might be good. Welshies are good first horses/ponies, provided you get the right one. That's the same with every breed. If you want to do everything, there are certain breeds that make brilliant all rounders, and a Percheron/TB cross would make an amazing sport horse while retaining the typical steady temper of the draft breed half. I was looking at a Percheron/TB a while back, but he had no manners so we didn't buy him. I need a horse that knows how to behave him/herself.

The-strawberry-tree In reply to ImmortalShande [2008-10-20 09:57:26 +0000 UTC]
I can expect you do in Showjumping. xD I like Welshies but the problem again is that I am tall and I know that if a horse has a good bone, weight is not so much a problem but I hate the feeling when your legs can wrap around the underside of the horse! I have dreams where I can't actually sit because my legs are too long and it freaks me out!
I just re-read what you had posted... Ten grand! =0 Flipping heck, does he come with tack, rugs etc? Ouch. Mind you I was watching an interview with Ellen Whitaker - she is well known showjumper in England, I am not to sure about Australia. Anyway the guy asking the questions said if you had a Million pounds to buy a horse what would you get in regards to the olympics? She sheepishly replied that it would not be enough. Not enough!? You can buy a pretty big house and probably your Warmblood for that amount! If I were any closer I would have slapped her face and said give the money to me! xD Bless her though, she was very genuine about it all, which inturn made me despise her more. You can't be a great showjumper, a model for the Caldene clothing range and a nice person! Only a super hero could. =_=

ImmortalShande In reply to The-strawberry-tree [2008-10-20 10:48:43 +0000 UTC]
lol then you might want a Welsh Cob. I'm not sure how big they get, but I know they are full size horses.
Yeah, same. At my old riding school (since shut down) I once rode a little shetland called Candy, and I could just about stand up with her underneath me. I hated that, but it was nothing compared to being the tallest in the class yet coming up to the smallest height. That was just ew.
Yeah, ten grand's a lot of money to spend on a horse. And it's just the horse, too. We'd have to buy tack and rugs and all that as well as the horse.
XD that's what I plan on doing one day. I wanted to be a model when I was little, then I lost the self-confidence, and I'm just starting to get it back again. Modeling would be great for me.
