Basically:
Little Mermaid is fascinated by the surface world, so she keeps goig to the surface, near a beach.
She sees a human man, and falls in love at first sight.
She asks a mermaid sorceress for help.
So far, it's basically the Disney version.
HOWEVER.
Disneys version - Give her voice to Ursula, Ursula turns her tail into a pair of legs.
ACTUAL version - Give her voice to Ursula, who then TAKES A KNIFE AND SLICES her tail in two halves, THEN turns the halves into legs.
(Note - There is NO mention of painkilling drugs or magic involved, this is all done with Ariel fully aware and awake).
After pain goes away, Ariel swims to surface. When she's on the beach, her gills gets overgrown with a layer of skin, and her lungs change to fully human.
She meets the Prince, and they live happily for a while, but Ariel always has a longing for her REAL home.
Prince gradually turns from good to bad, and the "happy ever after" is ruined.
Ariel escapes, and goes unto the beach, and SOWS HER LEGS TOGETHER again, and also CUTS OPEN her gills (which by the way is located on the sides of the neck....
Also, no painkiller or magic this time either).
She then swims into the ocean, And... end of story.
No mention if she managed to return to the mermaid city or not.

The Hans Christian Anderson version is a little different, but still pretty dark.
The mermaid saves the prince from drowning, but she's afraid to show herself to him, so when he wakes up, he thinks that a maiden from a nearby temple saved him. The mermaid goes and gets turned human, and while the prince likes her and hangs around with her a lot, he still has a thing for the girl he believes saved him. His father finally tells him he's going to have to marry the princess of a neighboring country, and he initially resists this, until he finds out the princess in question is (you guessed it) the girl from the temple. They get married and live happily ever after. The mermaid, brokenhearted, goes down to the shore, where her sisters show up with a dagger given to them by the witch. They tell her if she slays the prince with it and lets his blood drip onto her feet, they'll transform back into fins and she can return home. She agrees, but seeing him laying happily beside his new wife, she can't go through with it and drowns herself instead. Being a creature without an immortal soul, her body dissolves into seafoam and she's gone forever.
A later, alternate version has God granting her a soul for her selflessness, which ascends to Heaven.

Yeah.... most of Disneys stories are actually based on older, much darker tales.. ^^
Snow white basically murders evil stepmom-witch.
Sleeping Beauty was sleep-raped before she was awoken.
Cinderella was basically a slave in her own home (even worse than the movie).
Peter Pan is actually an Angel / Reaper guiding DEAD CHILDRENS SOULS TO HEAVEN (which is why nobody in "Neverland" ages - they're already dead)...
Pocahontas was also raped, and kidnapped by John, and held as a slave in england, and also FOURTEEN YEARS OLD when it all happened.
Belle was held hostage by the beast until she succumbed to a fullblown stockholm syndrome.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame murders at least one guy, and is later killed himself for it.
Mowgli IS indeed raised by animals - but later he murders, skins, and wears the tiger's fur.
so, yeah... Disney has some real dark shit behind their happily-ever-after tales.
Oh, also, Mulan was like... 17 or something, NOT an adult woman.
