Starscream is always trying to get rid of Megatron so he can become leader of the Decepticons (its been his key personality trait throughout the franchise) so when Optimus and Megatron are having a big fight in Transformers: The Movie, I’m surprised he isn’t around watching like Kup and Hot Rod are. While an idiot at times, you think he wouldn’t miss the chance of using this to find a way to take over as leader or seeing his abuser Megatron get pummeled. Plus apparently Starscream was close to Megatron in an earlier scene before Prime made his dramatic entrance, but he soon disappears.

If I could change the movie, I would have Starscream get in a fight with both Hot Rod and Kup while Optimus and Megatron have their own fight. Starscream eventually escapes them, where he sees Optimus holding Megatron at gunpoint. This makes him comes up with the idea to shoot the wounded Prime then finish off Megatron, not knowing that Megatron had access to a gun. Hot Rod finds Starscream and realizes what he is doing and tackles him, making Starscream miss Optimus but this distracts Prime long enough for Megatron to attack Optimus.

Not only does this change make it clear that no matter what, Optimus wasn’t going to live, but all the blame would go to Starscream since he would have killed Optimus if not Megatron. It also gives him some more screen time before his eventually death.

This would also have prevented Hot Rod from being blamed for Optimus’ death, which I think would have made him a decent enough character to be made the Prime/leader of the Autobots in other Transformers shows after G1.
