Description

I've been sitting on this for months.  Mostly because I really don't like the art part and just couldn't get it right. But whatever! I did a lot of research and put my heart into creating this character!

If you want to use her, please link back to here and credit me, other than that, go ahead!

Country Information:

Official Country Name: Republic of Albania (Republika e Shqipërisë )
Previously: Principality of Arbanon (1190-1272), Anjou Kingdom of Albania (1272-1368), Princedom of Albania (1368-1444), League of Lezhë (1444-1913), Principality of Albania (1913-1925), Albanian Republic (1925-1928), Alabnian Kingdom (1928-1946), People's Republic of Albania (1946-1976), People's Socialist Republic of Albania (1976-1991)

Capital: Tirana (Also the largest city)
Previously: Currës (Currently the second largest city.)

Languages: Albanian (Fluent in Greek and Aromanian, knows enough of other Baltic languages. Knows Italian, and Turkish pretty well.) Greek is the second most common spoken language, and Aromanian/Baltic languages follow reletively close behind. Elira knows Turkish and Italian because of her historical alignments, though she knows much less of Italian than Turkish, and a lot of her Turkish is old.)

Government: Parliamentary constitutional republic

Legal System: Civil law system

National Symbols: Double edged eagle, colors are red and black

Human Information:

Name: Elira Castriot

Meaning: Elira is an Albanian name that means “to be free”. Castriot was the surname of an Albanian national hero who was instrumental in a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire back in the 15th century.

Age Appearance: 24

Gender: Female

Birthday: 28th of November (1912, when Albania declared independence from Ottoman Empire. It was not official until the next year.)

About Her:

Personality: Albania is a strong and independent woman who is sick of people trying to take care of her. She’s been bounced from empire to empire and is all alone now, thank you very much. Albania is very proud of her individuality, her language is the only one of it’s kind and she uses a currency no one else in the world does.

She is very friendly, and loves to meet new people, visit her friends, and help them out, too! For someone who refuses to work for anyone ever again, she spends a lot of time cleaning her friends houses and tending to their every need. She hates seeing anyone sad. Albania also likes her alone time, though, and is most often in her own house.

Albania is not soft. When she has an opinion, she will let you know. Loudly. She has a very harsh streak to her, and knows exactly how to rile up and hurt people the most. True to her past as a fierce warrior, her house is decorated with many weapons and old flags.

Albania is very (mentally) laid back these days, but she had a paranoid phase in the 60s where she built thousands of bunkers throughout her country in case of a war. Now she sees them as an embarrassing reminder of that phase.

She is a hard worker, especially in recent times. She sometimes feels like industrialization got to her last, and that she has a lot to catch up on. Albania has been increasing both her infrastructure and her foreign relations, making her image that of a very outgoing and studious woman.

Hobbies: Albania is a chain smoker and a heavy drinker. Most of the time she only drinks with friends.

A good multi-tasker. She can be seen washing the dishes, smoking a cigarette and singing to herself.

Like clockwork, Albania takes a walk every evening. Visiting her, friends are sure to be spending a lot of time chatting in cafes.

Like Greece, many of her history's landmarks and architecture are still around. She can be found at them often, working with historians on preservation.

She sings to herself often, and also is pretty good at the Kaba (a type of bagpipe). She learned to play a few other instruments during her time in the Ottoman Empire as entertainment. She doesn't perform music for anyone anymore.

Physical Attributes:

Description: Albania’s body shapes is very mild, she has medium breasts and thin hips. Her nose is the most prominent feature on her face.

Height: 5ft 3 ½in

Outfit: Albania wears a modernized version of traditional Albanian garb. She wears a headscarf, both as a Muslim and as part of her traditional clothing. On her vest, there is a flower for each current county.

Curl or similar: Albania has an Italian shaped curl in the back of her head (Where Turkey’s curl is). This represents the heavy Italian influence as well as the Mediterranean influence and that Albania was once part of the Ottoman Empire.

Family and Foreign Relationships:

Ancestor: Illyria is to Albania as Germania is to Prussia or Rome is to Italy. She remembers Illyria as a kind mother, before Rome killed her and took Albania to live at his house.

Turkey: Albania lived with Turkey for 400 years. Turkey has tried to act like a father figure towards her. Right now they are on good terms and visit together often. They’ve had a few falling outs in the cold war era because of a difference of sides. During Albania’s time in the Ottoman Empire, Albania was a soldier for him. She had a few rebellions, but was ultimately the last country to leave the empire.

Greece: Albania and Greece grew up together in the Ottoman Empire. They have had their fights (See Northern Epirus) and Greece can act like he knows better than her. Historically, they fought a bit, but have always been close. And in modern times they are closer than ever. Their countries support each other very much and so do Heracles and Elira to each other. Albania often fusses over him. She always brings some cream for his cats when she visits. They view each other as brother and sister. Greece is the top investor in Albania’s economy. He really believes in her.

Bulgaria: Albania lived at Bulgaria’s house for a very brief time when she was young, but the Bulgarian Empire was short lived and he let her go back to her home. They aren’t very close, but so enjoy seeing each other and are friendly. They take smoke breaks together at world meetings. A lot of their time together is spend bitching about anything and everything while passing various substances back and fourth.

Italy: Albania and Italy are very close friends. Albania feels like she can tell Italy anything. There is a lot of complicated historical baggage, where Italy invaded Albania in WWII, but even through that Albania had a hard time hating him. They have many cultural similarities and great diplomatic relations. Italy is also the second top investor in Albania’s economy.

Romano: Albania has a harder time getting along with the other Italian brother. She takes out her frustrations with the historical baggage of their countries on him rather than N.Italy. Romano has a grudging respect for her.

Kosovo: Albania views Kosovo as a younger sibling of sorts. She was the first one to recognize Kosovo’s independence in 1992, and has continued to fully support them. There is no customs when traveling between the countries, as they don’t want to view each other as foreign. Serbia is particularly angered by their close relationship.

Serbia: Albania and Serbia don’t get along. They fight whenever they get near each other, sort of similar to Turkey and Greece when they get in the same room. May or may not involve the same amount of sexual tension.

Romania: Their parents (Illyria and Dacia) were friends. Romania and Albania grew up together in their very early childhood. They were both living in the Ottoman House as kids, continuing their relationship. In modern times, they are great friends. Romania was the first country to recognize Albania's independence from the Ottoman Empire. They are always showing each other their art/writing/thing they found on the internet. Albania smiles and laughs the most with him.

Russia: Albania and Russia were very close during the communist era, until she sided with China. Since then, things have not been the same, and they are often on opposite sides. Albania was always creeped out by him and dislikes his empire building mindset.

China: China was thankful for Albania’s support when he and Russia fell apart. Albania voiced her support for China in the UN and in return China helped her fix the mess that Russia left behind in her country.

America: Albania has always loved America, starting with his support during her bid for independence and throughout even the communist era. She calls him a hero and gets giddy whenever they see each other. America is a bit more indifferent to her, but considers her a friend and has helped her a lot, investing in her economy.

Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus: Northern Epirus was born during Greece’s 1914 occupation of southern Albania. Custody of the area/kid was given to Albania. The land was given autonomy and this decision was heavily supported by Greece. In 1916, the highly contested area was again part of Greece. Finally in 1925, Northern Epirus was given back to Albania and Greece gave up claims. Albania never liked Northern Epirus and wanted to get rid of him, seeing the small toddler as a representation of everything wrong and tense with her relationship with Greece. In 1991, there was a movement for Northern Epirus to become autonomous again, but it was quickly snuffed out. Albania was forced to execute Northern Epirus.

Albania is also friendly with Canada, Netherlands, and Japan. On a non-historical basis, I see her and Hungary as a good potential ship/friends.... Actually holy shit I've never been an OC x Canon person before but suddenly I need some Albania/Hungary. I understand now.

Brief History:

Early Years: Albania was born around 300 AD in the Byzantine empire. Her mother was Illyria, an ancient civilization that became part of Byzantine and was killed by Rome. Albania grew up and became known as Albania, rather than Illyria’s baby daughter. When Byzantine fell, Albania became part of the Roman Empire. This is when Albanians were converted to Christianity. In the 9th century, Albania became part of the Bulgarian empire and lived in his house, but that was short lived.

Middle Ages: In 1271, the Kingdom of Albania was first established. Parts of the Albanian territories were under Serbian control in the 13th century, but that ceased in the 14th century, when the Ottoman Empire came in.

Ottoman Rule Part 1: Starting in the early years of the 1400s, the Ottoman empire began invading and occupying Albanian territory. The Ottomans had total control of Albania by 1479. Albania went to live in the Ottoman Empire’s house along with Greece, Egypt, Bulgaria, Romania, and later Hungary. (Most of the Balkan area was under Ottoman rule at this point. It is also worth mentioning that another part of modern day Albania was under Serbian rule at this time, but Elira was not with Serbia, she was with Ottoman.)

Ottoman Rule Part 2: There were many revolts while Albania was under Ottoman rule, one of note was in 1443-79 which was the start of a unified and centralized government for Albania. Albania managed to beat the Ottoman Empire in several battles, despite the Albanian armies lack of forces in the face of the huge empire. When the rebellion's leader, Skanderbeg died so did the rebellion. Islam was also introduced to Albania, and Muslim Albanians were put into positions of power and treated better by the Turks. Throughout the centuries, Albania served as a Janissary (undercover as a boy) in the Ottoman Empire’s armies. She was well behaved and almost lost herself to the empire.

Independence: Albania was the last of the Balkan states to leave the Ottoman empire. As the empire collapsed, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, and the other states that were part of it revolted and gained independence. The First Balkan War in 1912 resulted in the independence of Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria and Albania. In the Balkan war, Albania was occupied by members of the other countries rebellion. In 1908, the Albanians had sparked many of their own and the other countries revolts. In 1913, Albanian independence was officially recognized at the Conference of London. Turkey was not part of these negotiations.

Keeping Independence: In 1914, Greece still had a hold on Albania, specifically the southern lands called Northern Epirus. Serbia was also attempting to claim Albania’s northern lands. Albania was threatening war. This is when America swooped in and recognized Albania as an independent state, forcing Serbia to back off. By 1921, the short lived conflict was resolved and the lands in question were given to Albania.

World War I ish era: 1928 was the start of another change in Albania, when a monarchy was established, lead by the new King Zogu. This is when much of Albania’s modernization began. While this was happening, Italy was supporting changes, as well as training an Albanian military. During this time Albania and Italy were very close friends. Serbia and Slovenia very much supported Albania’s king, partly because he was Yugoslavic in origin, and lead military forces through Albania to support him in the face of some short lived revolutions. Albania later joined Italy, Hungary, and Bulgaria in a coalition to dissolve Yugoslavia.

World War II: In 1939, Italy invaded Albania, making her the first Axis-occupied country in the war. Italy was using Albania as a territorial gain and a start to the ideal creation of an “Italian Empire”. During the occupation, Italy forced Albania to become more Italian. Albania was resistant, though after her king left, she offered to join Italy in a personal union. Albania was used by Italy during the Greco-Italian war as a staging area. Greece and Italy fought for control over her, but in the end Italy won. When Italy surrendered in 1943, the Germans occupied Albania. Germany was much nicer to Albania than Italy had been, but perhaps that was their downfall.

Gaining Independence Again: Albanian resistance forces, ones that had been brewing through the Italian occupation, got their chance to shine in 1944. The German occupation was destroyed, starting in the capital, Tirana, and going throughout the Albanian lands. They did not stop there. Albania helped Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina rid themselves of Germany as well. Albania was key in housing and hiding refugees during the war as well, both Jewish and Balkan. Albania’s revolutionaries were communist, and their liberation of the country lead to the communist era in it.

Communist Era: In 1946, Albania declared herself a communist country. In 1948, Albania stopped relations with Serbia and Slovenia (Yugoslavia at the time), despite their previous closeness, because of their wish to make Albania part of their own empire. Albania was not part of the USSR (Russia and company) but worked very closely with them. Throughout the communist era, Albania grew a lot. Industrialization and modernization swept through her lands. As a Soviet ally, Albania became closer with countries like Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Another part of the communist era in Albania was outlawing religion, both Christian and Islamic, and often with force. Elira herself practiced Islam in secret, like many of her people.

End of Communist Era: Albania sided with China when Russia and China’s Communist disagreements got international. Russia removed all personnel, equipment, and a naval base from Albania, breaking off all contact. Russia’s cut off of contact left Albania a bit stranded, as she was relying on Russia’s support in her economy and government. China swooped in to help and fill the gaps. By the 1980s, communism was collapsing throughout Europe, and it was beginning to fail in Albania. A new leader, Ramiz Alia, brought in a new constitution of democracy. In 1992, Albania became a republic and fully democratically run.

Modern Times: In the late 80s, Albania became more interested in joining the western Europeans by joining the Council of Europe. Albania wanted more friends that were experienced in capitalism, as Albania was not. In 1996, there was a collapse of the government and the UN sent Italy into help reestablish order. During the Kosovo War, Albania sheltered thousands of refugees. Albania’s economy has been booming.

In very short words: Albania first lived with mama Greece, then grandpa Rome, and then Bulgaria. She lived with Ottoman Empire/Turkey for 400 years. Then she became independent for a short while before Italy and Germany came in and used her for resources during WWII. Then she became friends with Russia, then China. And now she’s on her own.

Facts/Trivia:
-Nodding means no and shaking your head means yes. Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, and Egypt (and some countries not in Hetalia) also do this.
