Description OK, OK, this will be the last Applejack page for a while. I promise to do another character page after this (Hint, it's gonna be Fluttershy).

This page says all of the stuff that I had floating around in my mind when I decided to make Applejack argue with Twilight Sparkle. I hope that it explains why I had things this way.

This page took a lot longer than I expected as I had other things on, and because I was having difficulty concentrating on it for various reasons. Applejack running in Frame 1 took much longer than I expected, as it's a different pose from all of the other ones that I've done, and I'm still not happy with it. It's not a very good pose at all.

You might also notice that I've put Applejack in shadow for half of the comic. As her mood gets more depressed she goes further and into the shadow of the outhouse, until she's completely in shadow. she doesn't come out of the shadow until Frame 13, which is where she makes up with Twilight, and it's a happy comic again. Lots of hugs, please.

Part 2: [link]
Part 3: [link]
Part 4: [link]
Part 5: [link]
Part 6: [link]
Part 7: [link]

This page was created in Inkscape and Photoshop. Most of the foreground characters were scratch drawn for this page, or for previous pages.

I've used gameguy001 's Sweet-Apple-Acres as a background for all frames ([link] ). Though I modified it slightly as I wanted to put a shadow in for the fence.

Applejack's Cutie Mark was created by BlackGryph0n ([link] ).

The pose in Frame 8, 9, 10 and 11 is based on a vector of Rarity drawn by RedPandaPony [link] .

The pose from Frame 13 is based on StratTremolo's [link]

I still call bullshit on AJ's interpretation of what Twilight said.
More than likely she would have thought Twilight was talking about how she manages to keep a massive orchard running with the help of one other pony and the occasional assistance of a small filly. Without magic beyond what Earth Ponies naturally have.

You know, if I were AJ, I would have looked for Twilight on the path back to town. I mean, usually when somebody is hurt by a friend yelling at them to go away, they go away. And then they cry somewhere awayΒ from the source of their sorrow.

And once again, link.

It's kinda a tradition when female friends fight in highschool, at least one of them runs off and cries in the bathroom.

I wanted to put the speech bubble closer to the center of the frame, so that it wouldn't unbalance the picture having a big white blob near the edge.

Okay, I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but I'm from the South. The deep South in fact, small town, southern Mississippi. Y'all is a plural noun, and is generally used to replace 'all of you'. It is not used to refer to oneself, not unless you intend to be seen as extremely schizophrenic.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to LLAladonna [2014-06-27 19:18:34 +0000 UTC]

But ... Applejack isn't southern, she's Mid Western, isn't she?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LLAladonna In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-07-01 01:26:47 +0000 UTC]

She's supposed to be based on a sterotypical Texan cowgirl. The jargon is much the same, I lived half my life there, and my family still lives there.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to LLAladonna [2014-07-01 19:06:52 +0000 UTC]

Cowgirls sound like across most of the country.

Stand a tomboy from a small farming town from Michigan next to one from Texas and the best way to tell them apart is to check which store they brought their clothes from.

There's a lot of shared culture.

CynicallyBankrupt In reply to AlphaXXI [2014-06-23 00:39:25 +0000 UTC]

Not really. It comes from the old Scottish phrase, "ye all." When the Scotts moved to north america and migrated south, over the years it was shortened to y'all.Β

All Y'all, is what southerners use to say "you all."

I'm just sayin

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fotland42 In reply to CynicallyBankrupt [2014-06-23 21:24:36 +0000 UTC]

It depends on what part of the South you're from. In some places y'all is singular, and in some places it's plural. The Apple family, you may note, speaks in a dialect where it's plural.

Anyway, I don't honestly think the most likely theory is that PerfectBlue picked the wrong dialect. I'm more inclined to think that he's just trying to make AJ's dialogue as Southern as possible without really knowing what he's doing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to fotland42 [2014-06-29 13:34:14 +0000 UTC]

Whether it's correct to real life or not, the script writers use Y'all as singular in the show.

For example, she say's "Y'all wouldn't know useful if it came up and bit ya", to RarityΒ  in the section before the theme in Look before you sleep.

Besides, Applejack isn't southern. She's Midwestern, isn't she.?

In the US, apple country is Michigan, Washington and New York. Not exactly Midwestern, but not Southern, either.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fotland42 In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-06-29 18:00:07 +0000 UTC]

Regardless of where apples are grown in the real US, the Apple family clearly speaks with a Southern accent. I often see it described as an Ozark accent, to be precise, though I'm not good enough with accents to tell. And apparently the Ozarks used to be a major site of apple farming, although they are much less so now.

And if you're taking "Look Before You Sleep" as your evidence, AJ is mixing "y'all" and "you" seemingly at random, which I'm pretty sure indicates that AJ's precise dialect was uncertain at the time, at least to Fullerton. Whereas if you look at the transcript for, say, "Super Speedy Cider Squeezy," "Apple Family Reunion," or "Somepony to Watch Over Me," you'll see "y'all" being used exclusively for plural subjects.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to fotland42 [2014-06-29 18:58:23 +0000 UTC]

So, you're basically saying that the script writers are inconsistent?

Well, in my head-canon she's from the Midwest.

You're welcome to your own head-cannon, and I won't come over to your comic\fan-fiction and tell you to change it, so let's agree to disagree.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fotland42 In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-07-01 06:25:42 +0000 UTC]

I can agree to drop the issue of the precise meaning of "y'all". It's a nitpick, I admit.

But the Apple family is not Midwestern. They speak in Southern accents, always have, and presumably always will. There has never been the slightest bit of ambiguity on that, all the way back to "Mare in the Moon, Part 1". And I will not be able to drop that until you either change your headcanon, admit that you are holding it despite it being in direct contradiction with four seasons of canon, or refuse to talk to me anymore. I literally cannot just drop that.

The entire show is Canadian.

Besides, from where I'm sitting Southern means Louisiana.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fotland42 In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-07-02 05:27:34 +0000 UTC]

Aren't the writers in LA? Are they not integral to the show?

And what does the show being animated in Vancouver have to do with the Apple family accent? A Southern accent animated anywhere is still just as Southern.

And you realize that I have no way of telling where you live, right? (In fact, I decided on a whim a few days ago that you were Japanese pending further data, which I suspect I am about to receive.)

But in my experience, most people go with the South being more or less those states which once seceded, so that's roughly what I go with. More or less. And I've never seen anybody deny the Southernness of, for example, Alabama, so clearly the south can't be only Louisiana.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to fotland42 [2014-07-04 13:36:05 +0000 UTC]

The Voice Actors are mostly Canadian.

I may be wrong, but I suspect that they picked up their American accents from TV or from voice coaching, rather than from actual experience.

If you believe TV, every English person would sound like Hue Grant or Michael Cain, and every Mexican would sound like a 5th generation American with High School Spanish.

Either way, it's not all that important. I identify with Applejack as being Midwestern because of my own background and experiences. I feel closer to her that way.

I'd be interested in what I've said\done that says Japanese to you?

I don't think that I've ever written in Japanese on this site. The closest that I've got is some Hello Kitty posters.

fotland42 In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-07-05 06:08:53 +0000 UTC]

It's the ways in which you have made reference to anime, especially your avatar. And though there are plenty of Americans who are into anime, it's more interesting to assume you're from somewhat farther away.

But it doesn't matter how the voice actors learn accents. An accent is a property of the speech, not of the speaker. If you use the right sounds and the right word choice, you are speaking in a Southern accent whether or not you've ever been to America. If I make a Soviet Russia joke, I'm speaking in a bad Russian accent, not a bad American accent, even though I've never been to Russia. An accent is just sounds, not a life history.

How this SHOULD end:
Twilight gets her horn back, finds the spell Celestia used and takes her horn, wings and her ability to write anything with the following letter:
"Dear Celestia,
While being an earth pony I came to a conclusion: I am not the only one being to dependend on what I'm familiar with. So, as I recall you always rely on your wings to get you somewhere. This way you'll have to experience the wonderful world of walking. Also, you never actually used your hooves for anything other than standing. I guess you might be a little out of practice with using them but you should get along fine rather quickly, now that you can't use your horn anymore. And, as you always send others to solve your major problems, mostly by inviting them with letters or telling them per letter what to do, I also took your ability to write even the smallest character. I hope you are going to "enjoy" this just as much as I did.

Your faithful and totally not out for revenge student,

Twilight Sparkle"
