I've always struggled with anxiety/depression cycles and frequent periods of burn out that've made it difficult to pursue a successful art career (or be functional in general, to be honest). I've gotten better at working around and with my shifting emotional states, and unplanned paintings like this have frequently proven to be a cathartic reset button. It's easy to get wrapped up in the conceptual stages of planning out a big piece, and I often find myself somewhat disappointed with the outcome, even if later analysis shows the piece to be completely up to my current standards.

Setting out with no real goal in mind sets me up to be pleasantly surprised by the outcome of a painting, which is a nice change of pace for someone who tends to be a bit too self critical at times.

A lot of the entities I paint lately aren't intended to be particularly symbolic, but end up feeling like vague personal totems of a sort. This one feels friendly and a bit protective - perhaps a forest guardian and guide?

5"x7" watercolor, white pen, acryla gouache and colored pencils on kraft Stonehenge paper - I'll mat this up in white to fit an 8"x10" frame.
