Description

 Archimedes issue #1

We begin with a hard focus on a middle-aged Korean woman named Donna Cadowen as she wakes up and goes about her day, eating her breakfast, and examining the standing of her company (Cadowen Incorporated) in the stock-market. She speaks with her house keeper, Marietta about setting up a dinner party in the next week. As she leaves she mentions her son, who has not been seen the entire time and warns Marietta to tell him to make himself scarce when the dinner party starts. Once she has finally left, Marietta goes into the boy, Kirby’s, room and checks up on him, where he is excitedly putting the finishing touches on a new invention.

The scene then pans out to the top of a plateau, the roof of the mansion where Donna and Kirby live (it was built into the side of a mountain), and begins to put together a flight suit. This, he reveals has been his singular goal for the last five years. Ever since gaining an honorary diploma at the age of twelve he has been searching for a purpose, a way to spend his time, and he chose this. He spent the first three years building an impossible engine to power the jet-pack and another two working out the kinks in the suit design. At first, he only uses it to float a few feet above the ground, but, once he’s certain of it, Kirby takes off flying directly into the sky with no clear destination.

For a time, he is happy, he is truly free, swallowed by the impossibly blue horizon all around him, but then, he begins to sink. He realizes that he has not obtained freedom, but another notch to his leash, if he ever revealed his invention, his mother would certainly take it away, if he tried to run, he would certainly starve, the battery was designed to last forever, but the parts would wear out, sooner or later he would be earthbound again, and he chooses sooner. Cutting his engines, Kirby allows himself to drop from the sky and waits until he hits the ground, but then he notices something. While taking one last look around, Kirby sees a plume of smoke coming from a tourist helicopter and he turns his engines on again.

Using the jetpack to brace the craft, he lowers it to the ground and helps the people inside to get to safety as the helicopter catches fire. Then he flies away, a small crowd of people cheering and waving goodbye. He returns home and removes his helmet revealing a smile spread across his face. He decides to keep on flying, for now.
