Venomverse

Issue #5 – Decay
Summary

We begin on a very quaint little suburban house where a very different version of Eddie is sitting and talking with his very pregnant wife Anne. I comic book terms, I’d like to have a few panels of looking around the house seeing framed newspaper headlines talking about the ‘hero’ Obsidian (Venom’s alternate title in this world), you know “Obsidian Saves the Mayor”, “Obsidian and Spider-man, The New Dynamic Duo”, stuff like that. Anne (who had been reading a news article online) mentions how their son is going to be in the public eye and how she has some mixed feelings about that, but Eddie expertly dodges that line of dialogue by flirting with her. Eventually the idea of naming their child does come up and she floats the name ‘Dylan’ over to Eddie who quickly shoots it down, proclaiming that they need something better: “After all, he’s our little miracle, our little Angel”

Fading out from that line, we then focus in on Venom Cain who is wandering through the innards of the Poison’s home ship to the small alcove were he has made his home, all the while muttering the name ‘Michael’ over and over again. While he is distracted, Colony appears behind him (reforming from a swarm of tarantulas) and punches him through a wall in the ship. Pulling out from this as Cain stands up fight back, we explore the plans of the Saboteurs who are all being monitored by the astral form of Venom Strange. While Poison Pool’s job is to sabotage the engines, Widow and Colony had been tasked with taking out various key members of the home ship’s crew (which we see a montage that they’ve already killed several) and Venom was supposed redirect the ships flight path so that it would crash into Planet Carnage (from issue #2).

While everyone is distracted with the fight between Cain and Colony, we see that Widow has almost finished with her kill list saving the best for last, so to speak, the Poisoned Thanos. Here we also see her tactic for killing people, she extends her finger and drops a small, semi-sentient blob on to Thanos shoulder, it then burrows into his ear and devours his brain from the inside out. With the Titan dead, she is ready to pat herself on the back for a job well-done, when she is found out by a Poisoned Gamora and the other Guardians of the Galaxy. While they attack her, Venom is off mission, looking for his son and finding the room with all of the dead versions of him.

Disgusted by what he’s seeing, he comes across the Poisoned Moon Dragon who is going over some files and attempts to interrogate her about were his son is. She tries to attack him but her psychic blasts only serve to enrage Eddie all the more and he makes quick work of her before Strange finally manages to get him under control and back on mission (mostly by telling him that Dylan is still alive and he will lead Eddie to him AFTER he sabotages the flight controls).

The fight between Colony and Cain continues, with Cain still dazed by his experiences on the Web of Shadows world and not yet accustomed to his new abilities he is being utterly bulldozed over by Colony’s more controlled shape shifting powers. When he goes down, other Poisons manning the ship try to help but are quickly slaughtered. This gives Cain a stress flashback where he sees someone who greatly resembles Carnage mercilessly killing people including members of his own family and he stands back up, rejoining the fight more determined than ever. While that happens we see Widow being nearly beaten to death by the Poisoned Guardians until Pool comes to her aide, not that he helps very much, they both wind up getting beaten to a pulp.

In the meanwhile, Venom finishes up his job and destroys the flight controls before, finally, demanding to know where his son is. Yet, even before he can start looking, Dylan appears with the King and Queen in tow. Dylan does attempt to talk Eddie down and explain the situation, but Eddie’s not having any of it and almost gets into a rematch with King before Dylan’s own frustration activates his latent abilities and he, somewhat accidentally awakens the dormant Carnage symbiote contained within Venom, briefly turning him into a kind of hybrid/Berzerker form. At that moment, across the ship, in an act of final defiance, Poisoned Pool takes the detonator from his belt and sets off the explosives he had earlier stashed in the engine room.

Our last image is of the ship careening out of control and heading into the atmosphere of Planet Carnage.
