1 Mr. Faircloth: “This will take a few minutes.”
1 Joker: “That’s fine. In the meantime, did I ever tell you how I got these scars?”
2 Joker: “You see, I used to be a beancounter. A little, irrelevant accountant. Why, I was so far down the corporate ladder that a CEO like you wouldn’t even know my name. And that just made it easier when hard times came around to decide where to do the layoffs. I was devastated. Never saw it coming. So I decided to drink myself stupid until it didn’t hurt anymore. Just me and a bottle of Jack sitting in my car in the company parking garage.”
3 Joker: “Well, I had the bottle to my mouth, when another car comes speeding through. And it wrecks into mine, and I go flying, and my bottle breaks in my mouth. Tears me up good. And I drag myself out of my car, whimpering in pain, and see the car that hit me was the boss. Only he didn’t survive the wreck. And it just strikes me. The irony of it all! The rich bastard who fired me died, while I survived. The wheel turns, the last become first.”
4 Joker: “So I start to laugh. And it tears my mangled mouth wider, but I can’t stop. Because it’s just so funny. The man who valued getting rich above everything lost his life. And the irrelevant schlub – he’d been preserved. Preserved for a purpose. Do you understand what I’m saying?”
5 Mr. Faircloth: “I… I understand.”
5 Joker: “The man who has nothing to lose, never loses anything. The man who does… well. I prefer being the kind of man with nothing to lose.”
6 Mr. Faircloth: “It’s done.”
6 Joker: “Excellent, Mr. Faircloth. Always a pleasure.”
