1 Sunshine: “Did you do this with Babydoll, too? Fantasizing, I mean.”
2 Dr. Gorski: “Yes. She told me that she envisioned herself as a confident, magical sword-wielding heroine in her moments of deepest distress.”
2 Sunshine: “Why did she think that?”
3 Dr. Gorski: “She had been admitted against her will, and everyone she loved on the outside had died. She needed to think of herself as strong. As more than what other people thought her as. So she concocted this vision of herself that looked outwardly innocent, but that was tough and fast and deadly on the inside.”
3 Sunshine: “So, she fantasized about fighting her way out of here.”
4 Dr. Gorski: “Dear me, no. She fantasized about small things, how she would get through the day, and made them grand adventures. And though she fought in them – all kinds of imaginative monsters, like dragons – she didn’t dream about hurting other people.”
4 Sunshine: “I see.”
5 Dr. Gorski: “But there was something else special about her fantasies, too. She always included her friends. She imagined them as adventuring with her, and they were all as big and grand and powerful and important as she was. She didn’t view herself as better than them, you see. She was their equal. And her fantasies helped bring some of them out of their shells, strengthen them, too.”
6 Sunshine: “I… I understand.”
6 Dr. Gorski: “So, anyway, that’s why she’s so special to me. She was an utterly unselfish person who made everyone around her better, and she let herself suffer to make things better for girls like you.”
