1 Superman: “Heading back to Gotham?”
1 Batman: “Yes. Even as the injuries multiply, I’m still more use down there in the trenches than I am in these board meetings.”
2 Superman: “You’re of use here, too. Even if people snap at you sometimes. They don’t mean it, in their heart of hearts.”
2 Batman: “I don’t care if people like me.”
3 Superman: “Bruce… things are getting worse. You can feel it in how ragged the League is getting. Hear it in their voices, at briefings. I won’t be able to hold us together much longer.”
3 Batman: “I had the same problem in the Legion of Doom crisis. But you’re… you. You can do it.”
4 Superman: “No one was worshiping the Legion, not even Ares. The way average people treat the Joker… it’s different.”
4 Batman: “It will pass. He’s mortal, and there are photographs of him without his makeup on. Even scared people will eventually key in that he can’t answer ‘prayer’, and that a bullet or an electric chair would finish him off. Some weirdos and fanatics worship you, too, and it’s mostly harmless.”
5 Superman: “You said he personally told you he was interested in instituting an ‘old kind’ of religion.”
5 Batman: “You can’t believe anything he says. It could just be misdirection.”
6 Superman: “Even if we can’t stop him outright, we need to thwart his theological ambitions as soon as possible. Bruce, you’re the smartest man I know. Surely we can figure something out.”
6 Batman: “I’m working on it. I’ll come up with something.”
