Description Orobates pabsti is a herbivorous diadectid found the the Bromacker locality of the Tambach formation in thuringia, germany. It was alive during the middle permian, late campanian, around 260 mya.

It lived alongside other early amniotes like Diadectes absitus, synapsids like Dimetrodon teutonis, microsaurs like Tambaroter carrolli and different temnospondyls like Georgenthalia clavinasica and Rotaryus gothae. The number of herbivores massively outnumber the amount of carnivores in the system, making niche partitioning likely. The climate was hot and dry, with wet seasons and drying lakes and watering holes.

Orobates pabsti was described in 2004 using a pretty much entirely complete and articulated skeleton. It is notable for posessing a mix of both traits ancestral to all tetrapods, as well as derived traits (plesiomorphic and autapomorphic characteristics).

In 2019, a, extensive study lead by my zoology professor, Prof. Dr. Nyakatura, et. al., was conducted to reconstruct Orobates´ locomotive capabilities. The trace fossil Ichnotherium spherodactylum (Pictured above), common in the Bromacker site, can be attributed to O. pabsti. Computer models and simulations were developed ( with which you can play around yourself here: biorob2.epfl.ch/pages/Orobates… ), comparisons to modern sprawlers like caimans, skinks and salamanders were made and even a cute little robot, called orobot, was built. It was concluded that Orobates pabsti moved similarily to how caimans do today, and that it was less adapted to walking long distances than its bigger cousin Diadectes was.

This is probably the most thorough reconstruction i have drawn so far, and i think you can tell!

I also made an orobates headpats gif because why not
