Description
An slightly alternate version of Arya's mouse transformation.Arya Stark was tired, she had walked for days. She feared that if she didn't get food or water soon she might perish in this forest. Others seemed to have already met such a fate. She could see pieces of clothing here and there. Dresses, shirts, boots, even clothes of child size. Most seemed to have been there for a long time, while others seemed newer. Some were whole, others torn to pieces. But there were no bones or bodies, except the carcasess of animals that had fallen victim of predators. The predators must have carried the bodies off to their nest.
She started to see things and she felt like she was being watched. Her heart raced, she decided to look around just to be sure. That was when she saw the yellow eyes. A large grey dire wolf stood around 20 paces behind her. It must had followed her. She froze, but it continued towards her. It made her think of the insigna of her house. Which made her feel a bit safer. But it was silly of course, the wolf had no loyalty to House Stark. The wolf stopped a few paces in front of her, watching her intently. The looked at each other for a few moments. Then she turned around and started walking at a fast pace, fearing that running might provoke the wolf to start hunting her. The wolf suddenly leapt at her, bit her leather jacket and started to try to pull her down to eat her. She screamed and hit the wolf on the nose. It whined and let go off her. She started to run as fast as she could.
The wolf followed her closely, but didn't attack again, as if it was toying with her. She was getting tired and desperate. But hope rose in her as she saw smoke in the distance; a cabin. The cabin was surrounded by what looked like apple trees, that were leafless and appleless because of the coming winter. But there were lit candles and burning fireplace inside, so there was at least someone home. Arya started banging at the door and shouted for help before she realized that the wolf had stopped at the edge of the forest. It was panting heavily and as their eyes met the wolf lifted it head and howled before it turned around and left.
Arya could feel the door open before she turned around and saw an old lady in front of her in the opening. She was short, not as short as Arya, but just a bit longer. Her eyes were friendly and her short hair silvergrey.
"Hello, I'm a weary and hungry traveler that was just chased and nearly killed by a direwolf. Can I come in for a spell?" She asked
"I have coin" She added.
"Keep your coin, young lady. Come in, come in. I'll boil you some tea and give you some stew"
The old woman started to prepare the stew as Arya sat down. And then she started to go through different jars with what looked like herbs. She smelled each of the jars carefully, before shaking her head and putting them back. Sometimes she would glance at Arya before she shook her head. After some searching she seemed to find the jar she was looking for.
"Tell me, are you a wolf, per chance?" the old lady asked.
Arya panicked. What did she mean? Did the woman know she was a Stark? It's probably better to just lie.
"Err. No, I-I don't think so"
The woman seemed to examine her while holding the jar. Several moments pass before the old woman sighs and puts the jar back.
"Maybe I was wrong..." She started to search again, but found another jar more quickly this time. She took a long sniff, looked at Arya and looked... dissapointed.
"Well if you're sure. Maybe you're more like a mouse then..." the woman muttered and put some of the herbs in the tea water.
The tea tasted bitter and the stew was watery. But at least she was warm and slightly less hungry. The woman didn't talk much with her, which suited Arya fine.
"Finished?" the woman asked
"Yes, thank you for the meal"
"You're welcome. But now it's probably best if you continue on your journey. There is a farm not far from here. The farmer is kind and lets travellers sleep in his hayloft"
Arya packed her things, thanked the lady again and then left the cabin. As she walked through the small garden she now noticed how strangely human shaped the appletrees looked. They gave her the creeps. Now she was happy to leave the warmth of the cabin behind.
As cabin was out of sight Arya started to first feel dizzy and then really hot. Her body felt oddly uncomfortable as if it had begun to tighten and started to crush flesh and bones underneath it. To make it all worse she felt itchy all over her body and there was a strange pulling, pulsing sensation from her ears. Soon she had to stop as her body ached, it was becoming almost unbearable. She barely noticed that her clothes were now too large for her, slowly sliding off her body to the ground and exposing her now mouse like body and new mouse tail. The world seemed to grow huge in her eyes before she became so small that her own clothes covered completely and everything went dark.
Arya the mouse climbed out of the clothes pile through her right tunic arm. She stood paralyzed on top of her clothes. Every sound, every smell and everything around her felt alien to her mouse senses. Slowly it dawned on her. She was a mouse now, somehow. What sort of sorcery was this?
A sound caused her ears to perk. She looked up and saw the dire wolf again, this time it was even larger then before. It walked towards her with intent. Arya found herself thinking if she wanted to let the wolf end her life now or if she wanted try and live life as a mouse. As the sounds and smells of the wolf grew stronger she could only stand in awe at the powerful, huge creature before her. She forgot to run, instead she simply shut her eyes tight and waited for the teeth.
But nothing happened. Instead she opened her eyes and saw that wolf laid in front of her with its head resting on its forepaws. It still looked at her and seemed to try to gesture something at her with its head. Arya was pretty sure it wanted her to get up on its back. Arya carefully climbed up through its fur onto its back and then held on for dear life. The wolf waited a couple of moments and then got up on its feet. It walked away from the old woman's cabin but did not walk towards the farm either. The wolf stopped in front of a pile of armor and a dirty old tunic. The tunic had the wolf's head of House Stark.
Arya wasn't sure if she would ever become human again, but at least she had a friend by her side.
