Description

Hey Howdy Hey!

We're nearing the end! LET'S GOOOO!!!

Hume's feet were starting to get sore again. His lungs were scorched and dry, but he didn't dare stop, nor look behind him. To do so would mean certain death. As he dashed for the island, he could hear Argus less and less, and feared that his friend might be falling behind.

Then something whizzed past Hume's face. The shock of it made Hume stumble and nearly fall. A shower of arrows whistled through the air; narrowly missing Hume. He began drifting left and right in the hopes that the arrows would continue to miss.

"Aim higher, men!" Hume heard someone shout.

Hume was getting close. He could practically touch the grass on the island when he suddenly felt a sharp, shocking pain pierce his left leg. He yelped and fell onto the edge of the island.

"HUME!" Argus screamed, the sped up his running pace. All of his tiredness meant nothing to him now. When he reached his friend, he tried to get Hume back on his feet, but to no avail. Hume couldn't even stand anymore, but they couldn't give up. The humans chasing them were closing in fast. Argus knew he would have to think faster if they were to get out of this alive.

"Hume, can you crawl?"

Hume, fighting back tears from the pain, gave a resolute nod.

"Good. Get to the Staff. I'm going to buy you some time. All you need to do is touch the staff. If it chooses you, ask Cidvec to get us out of here."

Hume reached out to Argus in worry "Buh--"

"GO!" Argus shouted and turned to face the oncoming humans. Hume wailed, now unable to hold back his tears. Ignoring the pain in his leg, he turned to face the hill of the island, and began to climb.

Argus knew it was wrong to kill, but this was different. His life, and the life of his friend were on the line. He couldn't afford to hold back. He brightened the light atop his head, bared his fangs, and with a growl shook his tentacles like a rattlesnake in the hopes of scaring off the humans. The closest one stopped for a moment in fear, but the fear quickly faded, and he continued to charge. He thrust a spear toward Argus, who dodged it, and bit the spear in half. He growled and smacked the frightened human into the water with a tentacle, then turned to face the next.

The next human looked different than the others; stronger, and larger. He must have been the captain--he looked fearlessly at Argus in challenge. He swung his spear at Argus' head. Argus blocked it with a tendril. The captain yanked the spear out of Argus' tendril. Then yelled "Fire all!"

Arrows flew past Argus, who dodged quite a few, then smacked the rest away. These foolish arrows were no match for the might of the Oulish.

He turned to face the captain again, who slashed one of his tendrils. Argus drew back, and the captain thrust his spear forward, nearly missing Argus' side. Argus thrust all this tentacles forward and caught the captain's spear. He yanked it away, then rushed forward catching the captain's torso in his fangs. The captain let out a pathetic scream, and Argus tossed him into the water. Argus roared at the remaining guards, who ran away in fright.

Argus breathed a sigh of relief. All of a sudden, a new wave of arrows was shot through the sky, forcing Argus to fall back again into a dash for the island. "This is not the time for relaxing, Argus" he thought to himself. "I've got to get to Hume!"

Hume was about halfway up when Argus found him. When he reached him, Hume gasped, turned, and braced himself for a fight. "Its okay! Its me" Argus assured him. "Come on. We've got to get you up there!"

Argus lifted Hume up, and they limped to the top of the island. There at the center of a pool of water was the three-pronged staff covered in flowers and bathed in heavenly light. Hume could hear it...whispering to him;

"Hume...take the staff..." it called.

Hume let go of Argus' grasp, and reached a hand to meet the staff. Slowly he limped forward--every step becoming a little easier than before. He stopped, turned to look at Argus, then looked at his leg. Saying nothing, nor showing any sign of pain, Hume reached for the arrow, and pulled it out of his leg. Then as if by magic, the would healed within seconds.

He turned to face the staff, and the world around him became quiet. He reached for the staff once again, and grasped it with both hands. The voice in the staff seemed clearer to him now. Each word seemed to reach only to his ears, and it filled his soul with it peace and power.

"What do you desire of me?" Cidvec asked.

Hume closed his eyes and knelt against the staff in reverence. "Save us" Hume thought.

Then Hume stood up and raised the staff out of the water. As he did, the water began to bubble up and rise until it formed a circlet of water around the island. Argus watched in awe as Hume raised the staff to the sky; the heavenly glow of the staff reaching through Hume's entire body, until both were engulfed in light. Suddenly, the water sprouted forth out of the ground, propelling the island skyward towards a crack in the cave's ceiling.

As it did, Hume's body started to change. His burned and rotting skin was clearing up, his teeth and fingers returned, and he began to look like a normal human again. Hume opened his eyes and gasped as the island hit the ceiling. The water spread throughout the land, washing over the endless desert. Still the island rose higher and higher, until Argus and Hume could see for miles. Then out of the blue came a thunderous sound from the sky. They looked up to see the moon was putting itself back together. Hume laughed with tears in this eyes.

After a while, the water began to slow down, and the island was soon on the ground again. A large pool of water now covered the desert, and signs of greenery were quickly appearing before their eyes. The earth beginning to heal.

Argus and Hume slowly made their way off the island and stepped into the cool water. Argus sank to his knees in joyous relief. Hume stood still for a moment, then held out the staff. "I have given you a new world, Hume. Care for it as I have cared for you. Should you ever need my help, call, and I shall answer" it said.

Hume smiled solemnly, and closed his eyes. "Thank you" he whispered.

Hume walked to Argus, still staring into the horizon. They turned to each other with looks of hope, then they turned back to gaze upon their new world.

"You did it" Argus said softly.
