wikid piece, this is! people don't draw enough orcs here... i love how you made it look kinda rough, but still managed to put detail in it.

Sweeet... I love the movement in this one, it's really full of action! You're a wonder with digital art, how do you make it look so 'real' (as if by traditional meathods)? A brush set to opacity jitter applied to pen pressure? (that's how I'm starting to use my tablet.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheFirstAngel In reply to Vierdz [2006-11-09 10:58:07 +0000 UTC]

i do 2 things on painting. this one has some jitterbrushing linked to pendirection moving wich adds a nice pointilistic effect to it. i usually make my custom brushes when the sketch gives me the feel for what it will take mostly to speed up the poaintingprogress. second, the piece was painted very loose, i rather have a few messy parts than just a pure sterile overpolished cg look on such a piece. means, i earlier worked traditional, drawing, sculpting, brush and airbrushworks. most of that reflects on my way to sketch and paint. lets say the shodly way i do it is typical for the way i airbrushed. i hate templates. so i worked 100% freestyle, freehand brushing on the highest possible speed to have fast and fresh results with a nice flow. so i work on my cintiq. its just a digital sketchpΓΌad, i zoom in and have a wallsegmet, i zom out its like steping back.
pigfur is sort of a dry brush, singlestrain painted. almost no texturebrush used for this piece, but painted like if using agrylics, fast opaque strokes from dark to light, then setting dar values right and burst highlights slightly there you go

(Sorry for the late reply!) Before I took my break from the internet, I read over your explanation and decided to try messing around with the brush settings and disovered a very 'traditional' effect, which was similar to using white-out and black ink... I checked the Colour Dynamics and set the Foreground/Background Jitter to 0%, and control set to Pen Tilt, so I can switch between black and white if my foreground and background colours are black and white, ha ha. I ended up with this kind of dirty, natrual look, which I really like! Thanks for reminding me that the brushed are highly customizable! I saved down your advice to look back upon, ha ha ha. :] Wow, and you use a cintiq?! That must be fun! I have an intous, six by eight, and I'm stilll getting used to it, hee hee. Thanks for the wonderful advice!

glad that helped making cutom brushes is saving very much time and so much fun yep i work on a cintiq. and its probably the best tool i can think of for someone used to work traditional. also, if you zbrush - thats bumping up and blowin the mesh in 3d on pressureresonace, only way to top it maybe is claytools, but thats a whole different thing most welcome, keep on rocking!

Warhammer is so cool! I love this! did you use different brushes to build up the image? was it a scaned in drawing you drew? looks great keep up the good work and thanks for your comment

working on my cintiq usually saves me much penciling, in rare cases i pick up pencils, for example between some trainstations usually or before i sleep but basically, the cintiq makes my pc an electronical sketchpad. i basically push both lines and in certain cases mix them. for exaple when some tight linesketching is faster, i can easily overpaint a light blue print and draw in a few things for testing and scan those. sometimes you can see in rough scribbling things you work out digitally too so both ways around. for snakedancer for example, i made a nice mess with colorsplats and scanned them as blendmask. nice cheap painterly textures with huge fun of analog messing. wouldnt want to miss both and knowledge of any kind of media helps the whole artistic process, no matter what it is glad you like the piece, thanks
