An interesting thought experiment I had with a guy regarding Khan: What if Ceti Alpha V didn't turn into a wasteland. Imagine Khan managing to build a thriving community, and after all those years, Kirk finds him. Khan is now an elderly statesman, maybe with children and even grandchildren, content with his life, while Kirk is still the old, bitter Kirk we see in TWOK.

Hmmm? At first I wasn't sure what you were asking here, as I thought by "bitter" you meant Kirk was still angry at Khan and wanting to defeat him (either in an AU where TWOK still happened but Khan and some of his followers survived post-movie, or in an AU where TWOK never happened, period--my opinion of Kirk's motives would be drastically different between the two). But then I scrolled down and saw the conversation you meant, so apologies for the misunderstanding, and I hope none of what I said here had sounded rude! 
An AU where Khan didn't turn out to be such a malicious, revenge-driven guy, and Seti Alpha had turned out to be the live-able colony everyone had hoped, would actually be pretty cool, I agree. And maybe Kirk's regret at not having a family like Khan would be eased by the two of them actually developing an admiration for each other, and Kirk being named the godparent of one of Khan's kids (perhaps because Khan was thanking Kirk for his act of mercy in "Space Seed").
On a much sadder note... speaking of Khan having a family... am I the only one who wondered if Joachim was actually his son, in the movie itself? (This younger man whom Khan appeared to weep over bitterly: www.startrek.com/legacy_media/… I didn't remember his name offhand, so I had to look it up.)

Yeah, I think Joachim was his son with Marla McGivers. Probably named after the original Augment Joachim of Khan's crew.

More like, he'd find Khan with his many children and grandchildren running around as he does on all of them while Kirk looks on at how lucky Khan is.

It's such a weird AU. I can actually see this happen. Khan having a redemption by being a capable leader for his Augment survivors, building a world for them. In contrast, Kirk is going through a mid-life crysis, as in the real TWOK, understanding that he could have chosen another life. Not one of a great hero, but one that would haven't resulted in him being a lonely man.

If Kirk were to visit Khan's colony after the events from Search For Spock, in which some other old enemy of Kirk's steals Genesisand hijacks the Reliant instead but Kruge still kills Marcus, it would be a talk of how things have changed.
Imagine if decades later, one of Khan's many children is serving as the Captain of the most recent vessel to be named after Kirk or if one of Scotty's first stops after being rescued is to visit Khan's colony.
