It was an off-hand remark that was told you on your first day of captaincy, more a tall tale than an order or a warning. But it was hard-wired into every Earth ship's computer, and it meant a certain chronometric signature, that of what the beyond top secret memory banks classified as a Time Lord.
"Yes, from the way you look at it", the man dressed in a brown pinstripe suid said. While he said it with no sense of looking down on the crew of the Polaris, it was clear that he way beyond anything the veteran crew have ever encountered.
"There is so many things I'd like to ask", the Captain said, knowing well that his request will be denied.
"This is not how things work", the enigmatic stranger said, sounding non-threatening, yet firm.
"Oh, don't get me wrong", David laughed nervously, mesmerized by the figure before him, "It's not about things like, I don't know, if I ever become rich and famous. Or if we ever defeat the Kzinti. Or next week's lottery numbers, no, nothing like that. It's just..."
The stranger was desperately trying to suppress a smile. It was clear as day that he has been in such a scenario more times than he could count.
"You know what, shoot away", he said, opening his arms as if to signal that he is curious for what he might hear, yet with the absolute power to deny an answer if the question didn't suit him.
"The Polaris", David said, "Not this ship, but the name. Will it have a legacy?"
The Time Lord was now smiling broadly. He could feel the love and dedication the Captain had towards his ship.
"Oh, it will, it most definitely will", he answered. He could see something in the Captain's eyes that was a mixture of calmness, hope and satisfation. For a mere second, the world was pefect.
