Description

Even though the Daedalus class was meant to run on a small crew count, the briefing room felt more like a holding cell than a room to held the senior staff's meetings. The five officers were huddling around a small table housing a single tri-screen.

"Alright, people, so I had this idea the other day", Metlesits said, trying to sound casual and failing badly at it. Being the comanding officer of all these people still felt overwhelming to him sometimes.

"I hope it's not another ore hauling run to Starbase 19", Nussbaum said with a sigh.

"Nahh, it's something much more interesting", Metlesits said, this time with genuine enthusiasm in his voice, "I was studying the astrocharts and en route to Starbase 19, I found something we might check out. Have you folks ever heard of the Tristar Alignment?"

"Yes, Skipper", Lunn exclaimed with that almost lunatic shine in her eyes, "It's a star, orbiting a star, that orbits a much, and I mean much larger star from a greater distance."

"Yeah, and the simple fact it exists is the reason we should totally stay away from it", Gül interjected.

"People, that system was not explored by a manned ship, just by probes", Metlesits said excitetly, "I was thinking, if it's already in our way en route to Nineteen, we might take a peek."

"Skip, that system is a gravitational nightmare", Nussbaum sighed, "No ship that entered it came out in one piece. Besides, all navigation charts show detours from that region of space.

"I had this weird idea, you know...", Metlesits hummed, almost as if to himself, "What early Federation ship class had the best subspace geometry?"

"NX", Nussbaum said promptly.

"I second that", Lunn nodded.

"NX, what else?", Freeman said with a shrug.

"Bellflower", Gül said, shaking her head as if she were listening to idiots.

"What? You can't be serious!", Freeman said with a disbelieving moan.

"As if! The NX, even its refit, is a joke compared to even a first gen Bellflower!", Gül retorted.

"The Bellflower was a dumbed down NX with a better engine. It could never beat the real thing" Freeman rebutted.

"Daedalus!", Metlesits said before Gül could say something that would be a breach of officer's conduct. Everybody looked at him, not sure if he was joking or meaning it in earnest. The skipper couldn't help but laugh.

"Listen here, "he said" all the saucer ships minimaze subspace profile, we all know that. But the Daaedalus class, it was built to maximize hull strength, with the spherical main hull. Simple, primitive, effective as hell! Imagine taking this ship through the Tristar Alingment at Warp speed and..."

"Skip, with all due respect, this sounds even crazier than your usual shenanigans", Nussbaum said with a small moan.

"Just hear me out", the skipper said feverently, "At impulse speed, we'd be either thrown off course, or, worse, we'd be torn apart. Am I right, Helm?"

"Totally", Gül nodded.

"But imagine flying through the system at maximum Warp", Metlesits continued, "We'd be out of harm's way before anything serious could happen"

"Many have tried and didn't live to tell the tale, Skipper", Lunn said with a sad sigh, "The mass shadow of the stars is even more dangerous in subspace."

"With a saucer ship, not a sphere ship", Metlesits went on, "The sperical hull covers most of the engineering hull and the nacelles. It'd deflect the stars' gravity shear."

"Skipper, if we came that close to the stars in subspace, one of them'd probably yank the ship out to normal space", Freeman said, "We'd be dead before we realized what the hell happened".

"Not if we'd use one of the stars as a gravity slingshot to counter the effect of the others", Metlesits said, rubbing his hands together excitedly.

"Weeeell... I think the spaceframe might be able to take it", Freeman said, shaking his head half-heartedly, "The engines? No idea, might need to pump pure antimatter into the nacelles to keep up the negative energy coefficient."

"We need some extraordinary piloting at Warp speed not to end up as space debris", Nussbaum interjected.

"So you say you want me to abuse both the ship's geomatry and the navigational subsystems to basically do a dive-bombing like maneuver into the heart of a gravitational anomaly?", Gül said, almost laughing now.

"With extreme prejudice", Metlesits said with a cheeky grin.

"Bitchin'! Count me in, Skipper.", the pilot said, clapping her hands together.

"Hey, the XO said someone with extraordinary piloting skills", Freeman quipped.

"Bite me, jail boy!", Gül retorted.

Metlesits couldn't help but smile. After all these months, the crew was finally working together as a team.

Yupp, of course they did it, and they managed to accelerate the Palo Alto to Warp 5.8, breaking the speed record of the Daedalus class. Hey, mass shadow jumping at Warp speed is child's play, am I right?

This is exactly how Starfleet meetings go. Or should go. They've hit Ludicrous Speed!

Well, they're UEFF, but still...

well, the ship is definately exceeding it's maximum warp speed.

Yupp! Daedaluses were meant to run at Warp 3, refitted to Warp 4.5 later on.

and this one is proberly gonna blow it's warp core out.

So how long after this did they have to dump the core and probably the nacelles?

They managed to keep both, but had to do a full SCRAM before the critical moment.

Close run thing then, but a success none the less.
