Its ok if you learn from Anime! Voice actors are real people you know, real dialects and the speaking in anime is very good.
You will impress Japanese people by knowing even a few words, I know I enjoy it!
Though..don't call a Japanese person Baka or Aho unless you are good friends with them. It can be very insulting if you don't know them very well.

Well, as long as it doesn't offend ^^
I just don't think there should be a 'random words' stamp for any language. I don't see the point. At least with the 'beginner', 'intermediate' and 'expert' stamps, you can understand the level of language that person understands, which makes communication easier, but nobody is going to be able to communicate using a few words. What does bother me is when people try to learn phrases by Google Translate and anime and end up being wrong about it and making complete fools of themselves.
I suppose different people would have different opinions, but so far I haven't met a Japanese person who is bothered by it. I guess it just offends native English-speakers more than anything lmao c:

Why do you think learning from anime is wrong? The voice actors speak real Japanese..How is that wrong?
We learn English 4 ways: Reading, writing, listening, speaking
Anime has: Reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Its the same thing, but because its animation its bad? I think if people can learn to speak Japanese sentences from anime they are very clever people!
A lot of voice actors have different dialects. I speak two types of Dialect...Kansai-Ben and Tokyo-Ben. Things are said very differently in those dialects but because I'm from Osaka I speak Kansai-Ben and I've lived in Tokyo for a long time so I've learned Tokyo-Ben.
What non-japanese people learn is mostly Tokyo-ben. Because of the dialect that is said through anime is often Kansai-Ben its not wrong or "Bad Japanese"..its just a dialect so when Japanese language students hear it they get upset..they have failed to learn about Dialects.

I guess you could learn Japanese from anime if you combined it with another form of learning. Actually, I think watching anime would be great for the listening part of learning a new language.
I understand that the voice actors speak fluent Japanese but if someone starts to watch anime without any knowledge of the language it would be very hard, no matter how clever they are. I understand how reading and listening fit into anime but I don't understand how writing and speaking can be a part of it.
I'm not saying you're a bad person if you learn from anime, but it's not very reliable. Anime is not designed to help people learn Japanese so it doesn't give the person the support and guidance they need so that's why they get it wrong sometimes.
About the dialects, I partially agree with you. I come from Manchester (ironically, it's often referred to as 'the Osaka of England') and if a Japanese person tried to learn English from listening to me and then tried to talk to someone from London, it would be a lot harder to communicate. I have a hard time being understood by people from London even as a native English speaker so I imagine it would be harder for people from other countries.
I don't think it's wrong to learn from anime, but I think it would be very hard as in anime, the characters usually talk pretty fast. If somebody throws themself head first into anime without any knowledge of the language it would be very hard. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone but if someone did manage to learn Japanese from simply listening to people talk and reading subtitles, I would be extremely impressed ^^
