Description
In January 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers from the Ural Polytechnic Institute in Russia set out on a trek into the wilderness of the Ural Mountains. The group, led by 23-year-old Igor Dyatlov, planned to hike to the peak of Otorten Mountain, but they never made it back.
When the group failed to return as planned, a search party was organized to find them. On February 26th, the search party found the hikers' abandoned campsite on the slopes of Kholat Syakhl, a mountain in the region. The tent had been ripped open from the inside, and the hikers' belongings were left scattered about.
The search party eventually found the hikers' bodies scattered throughout the surrounding area. Some were found with severe internal injuries, while others had suffered external injuries, such as broken bones and lacerations. One hiker was even missing her tongue.
The cause of the hikers' injuries and deaths remains a mystery, and many theories have been put forth over the years. Some have suggested that they were attacked by a wild animal, while others have speculated that they were the victims of a military experiment gone wrong.
One popular theory is that the hikers were caught in an avalanche, which caused them to flee their tent in a panic. However, the injuries sustained by the hikers do not fit with this theory, and some have suggested that the avalanche theory was used as a cover-up by the Russian government.
