John D. Writer is the in universe author of my "Tales of Dismay" horror stories
In the lore, he sort of appeared one day, at first he was simply John Doe. But as some time passed, people come to call him the writer this trend would eventually give him the name "John D Writer"
Him not having a face is hard to explain really. He doesn't have a face if you see him in person you can see a face you don't see the black void, the black void only appears in visual medias such as photos film and oftentimes drawings of John

John himself also doesn't really have a house John lives in a completely blacked out camper that he drives around the outskirts of the town of grimmwood (the town the stories take place in)
John himself is also some of her clues not really talking to anybody unless he feels that there is a story to be written about other than that he tends to keep to himself other than the odd job here and there and the occasional grocery shopping the town's folk are accepting of their strange mystery man
