This basically shows how an artist grows.  It's a conception of all artists.  No one is instantly good, some just have a steeper learning curve.

I started drawing a lot more when I was in 6th grade (4 years ago) I drew a lot of concepts of what I wanted to do when I was older (and maybe some fetishes... heheh.), now every picture I make becomes smoother and more refined.

I barely keep any of my old drawings... artist's doubt and self-hate right there, but I always keep drawing more...  (It's normal for an artist to dislike his previous works, if you're an exception, you're amazing.)

And now here I am starting a web comic, learning computer programming, finally living with my father, playing League, sniping kids, and just being downright awesome *lens flare*.  To all the artists of the world, keep running.

lol right on!

Though I like to save old work despite not liking it. It's a nice reminder how far you've come and plus its kind of funny to see just how bad you were. It's a flash back to how your mind use to work.

This reminds me of myself, when I was young, like 3, compared to other people, I was really good at drawing my wolves, dogs, birds, cats.  Over the years (I'm 15 now), I improved with the animals and I plan on improving enormously in the future.

To anyone who is wondering, "How did this guy do this?!", one word folks, "practice".  If you draw everyday (Maybe not everyday), like I do, and this guy, too, then you will get better every year!  I'm not guaranteeing this, but that's what I had to do.  So keep up the work guys, and so will I!  KEEP IMPROVING!  <3

Haha yes, there's no such thing as perfection but practice definitely gets you close or at least moves you forward.

I love this! It's really cool to see how you've improved. I've been drawing for a long time (though I've only been on the site for two years), and sometimes it doesn't seem like I'm improving at all. Some days, I feel like I'm going somewhere. More often than not, I don't. And it kinda hurts sometimes. There's still a lot I have to learn, and sometimes I'm afraid I'll never get it. But this gives me hope that maybe when I'm older, I'll be at this level. Fingers crossed! And again, great job!

Don't worry you'll get there and I like to remind artist that it's not about age. You can definitely will get better. But it all depends on the time you actually put into practicing, not how long you drag out a piece by putting it off for days. Keep drawing everyday and you will see improvement. It'll come slow but it'll be there if you put in the work.

Thank you for sharing your hard work for the world to see because my friend and some people I really care about are really good at art but dont understand that its the hard work that matters. I showed them this and it inspired them to try harder and to finally break the fear of showing there selves to the world.

As much as this makes me look like a fan boy and a little girl or whatever but honestly I just cant express How much joy just hearing the word "Running,Towards,or Improvement" brings to me. I really really suck at drawing and am probaly at the drawing level of the beggining of him with a jacket.

Any Ways for thanksgiving Im thankful for this!

Your fan Kosmo Benja

Haha, when I told you this, I wasn't kidding!

"Nothing can stop you from bettering yourself as an individual, and not only will others notice this, but they may also find the inspiration to take the path of self-improvement.  c:"

I've inspired people this same way, too - not as an "artist," but as "someone who cares."  But you know, artists benefit from knowing someone cares about them and their endeavors, so it's possible I might inspire them somehow, too (and it's not like I can't ever find inspiration from artists, either).  We're all human, and so I believe we all should be in this together, regardless of the myriad details of our individuality~

Psykan In reply to ??? [2014-12-01 18:02:14 +0000 UTC]

I forgot if I've commented on your piece, lol...but I love how you represented the truth about self-improvement here: it's not the myriad obstacles, close calls, "cliffhangers," and other such adversities that can bring an end to self-improvement.  The only one who can halt your self-improvement is yourself.  So long as you have the drive to keep running, the mental clarity and awareness to keep the path in your sights (and the self-discipline to get back onto it if you happen to stray from it, even slightly), and the willingness to adjust and adapt to any and all adversities that come your way without altering the path itself...haha.  Nothing can stop you from bettering yourself as an individual, and not only will others notice this, but they may also find the inspiration to take the path of self-improvement.  c:

This is a path all humans can take, regardless whether it be as an "artist," a "literary author," a "doctor," a "scientist," or anything else of the sort.  In that sense, each of us has the capacity to take our own individual paths, yet at the same time take a path shared by all others.

TheK40 In reply to Psykan [2014-12-02 17:56:51 +0000 UTC]

YEsss Thank you. I love getting messages like these, getting in depth meaning of the piece. You are so right, its what I keep telling new aspiring artists. And from time to time I need to remind myself as well. You are your own worst enemy... you gotta keep moving on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Psykan In reply to TheK40 [2014-12-02 18:12:49 +0000 UTC]

I'm not even pursing a career in art, and I understand this well enough to offer insight and support to aspiring artists.  The reason I do is simply because I care about them.  I want to see aspiring artists succeed - who cares if I'm not taking the same path?  The world could stand more compassion and less apathy...and that's what MY path is all about.  I love the world and everything that shares it with me~  Ah, and those "self-reminders" are really important, too - few people are going to want to keep reminding you to keep going, especially since they have their own paths to worry about.  As someone who values (and employs) that kind of self-discipline, I totally respect you.  It's anything but "easy," but I'm doubtful you'd want it any other way, yeah?  xD

And frankly, I'm getting a bit irritated at someone in particular who's whining about dA's "poorly outline contest rules" right now.  No artist could ever succeed with the whiny, narrow-minded, and restrictive attitude that person's comments to me carry.  -sigh-

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

TheK40 In reply to Psykan [2014-12-03 19:49:33 +0000 UTC]

I agree, even if you aren't an artist yourself you can definitely still inspire them and its so much more satisfying when you succeed on something you worked really hard on.

Lol and yeah whining gets nothing done.

Psykan In reply to TheK40 [2014-12-03 20:11:42 +0000 UTC]

Eeyup~  Something I like doing is giving a bit of insight to artists (like with contest, for example).  People were really confused about "not obstructing the road," but it clicked for me instantly...so I turned around and give some insight to some of the people who were having trouble.  This was one bit of insight I gave regarding "not obstructing the road":

"So, say...drawing a bridge over the path is still within the constraints of the rules, because you can pass under a bridge.  Likewise, drawing a fallen building that covers only a portion of the path is also adherence to the rules because you can go around it and not stray off the path.  However, drawing a bridge or building that's collapsed and totally obstructing the path to where you'd have to stray off of it to get around would be grounds for disqualification.  The criteria was certainly vague, but I believe the intent was to "get people to think outside the box."

It's just to give people a place to start so they can figure it out from there.  Even if my purpose for entering the contest was "to win," I'd still have offered that kind of insight - even if it hurt my chances of winning - because it's more important to me that everyone who participates in a contest like this is as comfortable as I was.  And also, I'm not shallow enough to assume that even though you placed first, the "openness" theme clicked for you as instantaneously as it did for me.  I wouldn't be surprised if you and everyone else who placed in the "top 50" had to prod your brains over it a little, and I'd have been happy to offer some insight if you needed it.  c:

ah yeah, it confused me a bit as well. I actually asked a few of my friends to make sure and in the end still decided against obstructing it in any way just in case :'D

I read your comment, and I agree with what you said about "hard work being the important part."  "Natural talent" isn't an excuse for anyone to be lazy and not give their best effort, and it certainly doesn't excuse arrogance...and no matter what anyone thinks, that laziness and arrogance will make itself apparent somehow, no matter how hard a "naturally talented" artist tries to cover it up.  At the same time, though, the 'fear of failure" is very real (and understandable), yet that fear will make itself apparent, as well.  It's not easy to conquer that fear, but it's crucial for any aspiring artist, no matter how "talented" they may be.

This is why I show compassion for all people: as someone who's been able to conquer all of that "negative stuff" and has the strength to keep it from taking control, I can vouch for the confidence (and creativity) it brings.  I will lend an arm of support to people who are still struggling because I want them to find the strength to conquer their own negativity and keep it from taking control of them, too.
