Description
Been a while since I added to my cast lineup. A redo of an older character to match with current lore.Brief Biography
Ever since he was born, Bowen (real name Bok-Man, the actual way to pronounce his name in the Chyunh language) was destined for the seas. Bowen never knew his mother very well, as she separated from his seafarer father since he was very young. Being the sole caretaker of his son, Bowen's father often took his son on his voyages, and Bowen became accustomed to his father's crew, who treated him like one of their own. Bowen's father, in addition to being a sailor, also worked as a seaborne trader, and Bowen became familiar with foreign cultures, primarily Borealian ones due to its close proximity to his home.
Growing up learning the ropes (literally for handling ships), Bowen became familiar with the operations of a seafaring vessel, and Bowen's father envisioned converting their ship into an airborne one. However, in order to fund the conversion, Bowen's father ran into debt, not to mention crossing a local pirate lord for a very petty reason (the pirate lord wanted to be the only one with an airship in his area). Bowen did not know of his father's shady dealings until it was too late, upon which the pirate lord and his crew struck. Everyone onboard the ship was either killed or taken prisoner, with Bowen's father personally slain in combat by the pirate lord himself. Bowen himself pretended to be dead and escaped the wrath of the pirates, but without a crew, the ship began drifting for some time, until it stopped along the shores of Takao, off the west coast of Hinomoto.
Bowen was discovered alive by the bushi of the Satou clan. Although the Satou family, primarily Kenjiro, nursed him back to health, Bowen returned to the now grounded ship, and mostly kept to himself. For a whole year, Bowen kept to himself, avoiding contact and only going to Takao to accept adventurer jobs, earning the money he needed to restore his father's once proud vessel. In that one year, there was always talk about the Chyunh boy that kept to himself.
It was recently when the adventurer (Jacob or Rachel based on player choice) wanted to look for a vessel to take them home, upon which Kenjiro suggested looking for Bowen. The initial meeting was cold, as Bowen had little interest in helping out some strangers. However, right around this time, Bowen's nightmare returned: the same pirates that murdered his father were raiding the shores of Takao. They had assumed the ship had sunk after making an example, but after seeing it mostly intact, decided to take it as a prize. Bowen tried to fight back against the pirates, but the numbers game soon overwhelmed him, and some of the pirates were also shocked to learn Bowen was alive. Shock turned to anger, and the pirate lord resolved to kill the boy himself, but the intervention of the adventurer and the Satou clan bushi sent the pirates packing.
By this time, Bowen had a change of heart. He agreed to take the adventurer onboard the ship, but they will have to pay for the rest of the repairs. This was agreed, and the ship, now rechristened the Pioneer, became the base of operations for the adventurer and his party, to Bowen's chagrin. Nonetheless, as he had agreed to the task, he became the main navigator for the Pioneer, since only he has the expertise to operate a ship.
Personality and Traits
Due to the trauma he suffered at the hands of the pirates, Bowen became a loner, keeping himself at a distance and trying not to get anyone involved with his feud against the pirates. That being said, he is familiar with Kenjiro Sato, and through him, Keiko. It was through the influence of Kenjiro that Bowen was able to live in Takao, though as mentioned, he preferred to keep things to himself, fixing up his late father's ship with parts for the whole year.
Bowen and the adventurer have a rough start, with Bowen outright dismissing Jacob as an idiot or Rachel as a ditz, depending on which character the player has chosen. Even though he agreed to be their ferryman around Orbia, Bowen remains distant with the antics onboard the Pioneer. Highlighting the distance he keeps, he always goes on a last name basis, such as "Satou" or "Kugimiya" to refer to Kenjiro or Keiko.
Powers and Abilities
As mentioned, his time spent with his father has toughened Bowen up from a young age. However, rather than using brute strength, Bowen prefers a "thinker's game" in combat. Sticking to his naval roots, Bowen's preferred armament is a scattergun, designed for boarding actions. In addition, Bowen also equips a rattan (cane) shield on his left shoulder for protection against small ballistic fire, such as arrows or bullets.
Bowen's main asset is his intelligence, both as a strategist and his expertise with operating a seafaring vessel. If the Pioneer comes under attack, the crew often defers to him for a repelling strategy. Due to his use of a scattergun, Bowen has a very "in your face" fighting style, blasting foes while tanking with his rattan armor for Kenjiro, Keiko or the adventurer to land an attack.
Bowen is a unique tanky Water Archer character, and like Kenjiro and Keiko, is unlockable by playing story chapters.
