This is one of the best Sgt Rocks that has ever been produced outside of the Man "Mr. Joe" himself. The influence from father to sons did not fall far from the tree. I love when an artist has the vision to use other than white paper. So much can be accomplished by using this technique, as seen here. The contrasts with the greyish paper, to the black and white, is truly a mark of distinction. Andy captured Sgt Rock in his true essence. A tough no bull soldier that does not fear for his life when the chips are down, but knows that men like him don't die in battle. They can't! If he falls, the line falls, and there is no place in battle for that. The eyes and mouth show the war weary soldier while the scars on the arm show his devotion to his cause. The grey coloring that floats behind the smoking barrel adds to bringing "Sarge" from the background. The simple lines surrounding him give the feeling of the tiger cages that so many of our men spent time in during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The only thing that I know is wrong with this picture is that it is not hanging next to my drawing board so that I may gain inspiration from it! But I am working on your Correspondence Courses and I hope one day to be able to produce a work of art like this. Thank you for a vision from the past!

There is a quality about the eyes which I can't quite identify. Perhaps it allows us, the general public to--in the words of 'Herger The Joyous' from "The 13th Warrior"--"calculate what they don't know" of Sgt. Rock's potential and our own threat assessment abilities.

Andy,

I was the Veteran that sent you, Adam and Mr. Joe the book "Mommy, What As A POW/MIA?" back in January. I am considering buying the book rights back from that publisher and redrawing it now that I have gained more experience as an inker. When I created that book it was mainly for children to understand what a POW/MIA was but it grew to helping adults learn more in the process. I hope you were able to enjoy it!

God Bless!
