Chapter 31 Nightmare

Darkness hovers and minute light is present. It is a warm yet cold glow. The tint is faint blue. Dripping sounds resonate from the murk all around. Frigid stone creates the bleak, empty alcove. The chilled air is dank and musty.

The tender and healthy shine of the sun is off in the distance. It is at the end of what seems to be a short tunnel. A tightly wound hand drags forward reaching for the light. Another follows suit and together they pull her forward.

'What is this place?' Wavers through Malissa's mind.

Staring out at the light her bandaged fingers brush against the strange wall of light. A line is drawn in the rock, carved and filled with wax. Her hand pushes through the barrier and pain fills her. She withdraws, watching the birds from afar. They chirp so cheerful and free but she is not.

'They look so happy. Why do I feel so weak?'

She lies against the wall, blankly eyeing the water fall from an ice sickle. Its drip drops tick by endlessly. The princess slowly crawls across the floor of the cave. The light glistens from a puddle.

In the reflection there is a face that is masked by bloodied bandages. They cover all but one eye, the left. It is dull and only faintly green. She unwinds the silken cloth but stops when some of it has been undone.

Her right eye is sealed shut. Crusty sanguine encases it in a scab. The tresses are mangled and filthy. Malissa clutches her hands. She loosens the bindings to find her fingers marred and torn.

A tear trickles from her eye and she wails. Her voice is ragged and hoarse. The pained sound echoes out into a still silence.

"What is happening?" She murmurs to only the cold, "It hurts. It hurts… Faith make it go away."

There is no one anywhere to be seen. Mosses grow on the walls. They are tinted, illuminating a small area around them. She turns, wobbling to her feet. They sear with agony and she collapses, lying on the cold stone floor.

"All alone— all alone… they abandoned me— Nobody loves you, nobody loves you," cries the princess, her body curled into a ball.

Malissa's eyes open and she screams, falling out of her bed. The green-coated knight jumps from his chair in surprise. Sir Farrell quickly steps beside her while she flails and wails. He retrains her hands, lifting her back onto the purple washed bed. Slowly she calms, her eyes flooding with tears.

"What is the matter?" Asks the man.

Her eyes peer at her hands. They are smooth and flawless. She pulls her hair down, looking upon its radiant crimson form. Malissa grasps him and holds him tight.

"I had a terrible dream. I was all alone in dark place. I was not well and could not walk," blubbers the princess.

"It was just a dream," says Farrell, gently stroking her, "You are fine now."

"But it felt so real."

"It was just a dream. You have been here in bed since dinner ended."

"If you insist. Please never leave me. I do not want to be alone."

"You have my word," smiles the knight.

A form squirms in the bed beside them and golden hair emerges from the covers. Lily yawns tiredly, rubbing her eyes.

"What is the matter?" Mumbles the girl, "It is so loud."

"I just had a bad dream," says the princess.

"Oh, really? I hate it when I have those."

Malissa's hand lightly pats Lily on the head and she smiles. The child lays back falling into sleep's embrace. The princess broods, her eyes peeled open.

Farrell says, "What is the matter?"

"I do not want to go back to sleep. If I do, I might have that dream again."

"We cannot have that Mi Lady. You need to sleep."

"But I am scared. Lay with me," says the princess, lifting the covers.

"This seems out of line and inappropriate," says the knight.

She ogles at him, "But if you are with me, I will feel safer."

He looks away unsure and she says, "You can keep your armor on. If that makes you feel more comfortable."

"I still think it is a bad idea."

"Please just lay next to me until I fall asleep."

"I suppose it could not hurt," finally says Farrell.

She scoots over and he lays on the bed, above the covers. The princess glows with bliss, as her arms nestle around him. He nervously becomes stiff as a board, not moving at all.

"It will stay like this forever wont it?" Asks Malissa.

"What do you mean?" Replies the knight.

"Every one staying so nice and happy. All of us together, it feels even better than my dream."

"I cannot say. But I am rather doubtful that things will stay the same. Time always moves on whether we want it to or not."

She yawns snuggling close, "Well non the less I want to stay just like it is right now…"
Farrell opens his mouth to say something but stops, seeing that she is already asleep. He shifts, trying to leave but she is wrapped around him. He sighs merely lying there.

The sun rises gently over the horizon and the door opens. Faith enters the murky darkness. She pulls open the curtains to find a man in the princess's bed.

"What have we here?" Smirks the maid.

Farrell grabs her hand, "It is not what it looks like."

"You are a dirty man. Lily was right there when you did the nasty," giggles the sly woman.

"The princess had a nightmare. She insisted that I sleep next to her."

"A nightmare? That is odd. Did she tell you what it was about?" Ponders Faith, ripping her hand free from his grasp.

Farrell sits with his legs off of the bed and his elbows on his knees. His face rests in his hands.

"She said it was a dark place. That it was lonely and that she did not feel well, she could not walk."

Faith has a strange look on her face. It is a mixture of fear and surprise.

"What?" Asks the knight.

"It is odd," says Faith, "She has had this same dream before, when she was ten as well. From what she told me then it was a disturbing thing even by my standards."

"What did she tell you?"

"I will not discuss it. It is too gruesome for Lily's ears. Just know it would give me nightmares."

"Give you bad dreams it must be bad then," chuckles Farrell.

"Indeed. Well come along now. Little Ladies need their beauty sleep," smiles the maid.

"But should I not stay and make sure that they stay safe?" Asks the knight.

"They will be fine. What could happen? The thief only breaks in at night."

"Well if you insist," reluctantly replies Farrell, standing from his position.

"Daww look at you wanting to stay in bed with her. I am tempted to let you but duty calls I am afraid."

"What are you talking about?"

"A letter came for you actually," replies Faith, waving a sealed envelope.

He takes it from her, ripping it open. He straightens out a letter it has a dragon wrapped around a tower. The parchment is worn and clearly seen a lot of travel.

"Sir Farrell you have not been sending reports back on a regular basis. It is worrying us. If this letter, it is the tenth actually reaches you send word back to us at once. If you do not we will have to assume that you died in action after another month. Sincerely yours Captain Draconis, First Company."

"Shit," says the knight, storming out of the room.

Faith smirks, hovering over the bed. She peers at the slumbering princess. Her fingers wiggle around her sides and she giggles.

Malissa stirs tiredly, "Faith? I had such a bad dream. I saw it again!"

"Shhhh," smiles the caretaker, sitting on the bed, "Do not worry my dear. I will help you accept it."

Malissa scowls "I just want my happy dreams."

"Well then go back to sleep. I am sure that everyone is waiting for you," says the kindly woman stroking her face.

The princess smiles curling back up. Faith closes the shroud around her bed and shuts the door. She stands in the hallway a blissful grin filling her face.

'So much to do, so little time.'
