This photograph captures a lot of what America means to me. It is of a large strip mine on the Minnesota iron range. A lot of work went into this mine, some of the most arduous imaginable, and it helped fuel American industry. Strip mining is environmentally devastating- nothing in sight is the way it was before the mine. Yet now, decades later, the iron ore hosts green plateaus and deep lakes and beauty.
