Often regarded as the most effective Resistance movement of the Second World War, Josef Tito and his Partisan army would start their war on June 27th 1941 with the official foundation of the Partisan Army followed by an official call to the people of Yugoslavia to join in arms in the fight against the Fascist occupiers on July 4th

"Peoples of Yugoslavia: Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Montenegrins, Macedonians and others! Now is the time, the hour has struck to rise like one man, in the battle against the invaders and hirelings, killers of our peoples. Do not falter in the face of any enemy terror. Answer terror with savage blows at the most vital points of the Fascist occupiers. Destroy everything – everything that is of use to the Fascist invaders. Do not let our railways carry equipment and other things that serve the Fascist hordes in their struggle against the Soviet Union. Workers, Peasants, Citizens, and Youth of Yugoslavia……to battle against the Fascist occupation hordes who are striving to dominate the whole world.”

Many would heed the call, leading to an intensive campaign against German and Italian Forces and by September 1941, it is estimated that there were about 70,000 resistance fighters in Yugoslavia. Tito ordered local commanders and fighters to only engage enemy units that were isolated or few in numbers and such they began engaging in classic hit-and-run tactics. But their war had only just begun and the Partisans had taken but the fist steps on a long and bloody road to liberate their Homeland.
