Members of the Lessening Society are de-souled humans who are turned into soldiers for the Omega, an evil an entity who sought to exterminate the entire Vampire race for jealousy for not being able to create. The Lessening Society is usually made up of psychopaths and killers, turned into undead soldiers to fight a secret war between them and the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Lessers are turned after the Omega kills them, then he removes their heart. After that, he fills them with his essence, his own blood which is black as oil instead of red. Once they've been turned, they become effectively immortal, that is until you get them in the heart. Puncturing the chest area with the heart used to be with steel will cause a lesser to die, and the essence return to the Omega.

Lessers do not need to eat or sleep, in fact all they need to do is shut down for a couple hours every day in order to function properly. Lessers who have been in the society for a long time normally lose pigmentation in their skin, hair, and eye color.
