This comic is in reference to a comment by Lauren on her DA account that I'll assume most of you have seen (if not, just enjoy this for what its worth) [link] .It seemed like a rather horrible horrible thing to say about a pony, or anyone for that matter. And so I wanted to pump this out while it was still in memory.
Looking forward to the episode introducing everyone's parents.

I'm not sure agree with the diea that is was a horrible thing to say. If Dash were a real person then yeah that's the kind of thing one shoud have more care about saying, but to me that phrase just struck me as a creator making a comment about her character. A Rainbow Dash who wouldn't like her sister or pay her much attention if she had one is still the same Rainbow Dash who defended Fluttershy and turned down her dream for the sake of her friends. That a writer can step away from a character to look at them objectively shows good writing.
Anyway asides from that the picture is still freakin' adorable aaand I just wanna pick her up and cuddle her.

I thought it was a really odd thing to have as the only reason stated why she didn't have a sister. It becomes a horrible thing to say when put in the context of the story, that RD has parents who consciously made the decision to not have a child, and if that's the only reason we're given then that's the only reason we know why they wouldn't have another child.
I'm sure most people were comfortable with the idea of a member of the main cast being an only child, most of all the independent Rainbow Dash, as well as not giving all of the CMCs a sister in the main cast, even with the speculation going on about her and Scoot.
It becomes more odd when you note that Luna and Celestia were in a bad relationship, and as far as we know are now getting along. You wonder 'is it just that they don't want the older of the two siblings to be the cause of the problem'? Imagine if RD did have a sibling, and if despite whatever it is in her nature that makes her unfit for one, learned how to become a good sibling. Wouldn't that make a great story and develop RD's character so meaningfully?
You might say I'm over-thinking things, but I'm finding myself a little taken aback by the lines of reasoning that goes into such a great show's construction. It makes sense, but its just ends up driving things off little by little.
Anyway, I'm glad you liked the comic. I thought they were cute too.

Yes, I think I see what you mean. Really, all Faust said on the subject was that she didn't think Rainbow Dash would be the type of older sibling who would treat a younger sibling as well as they are expected to be treated in Ponyland. This statement is actually rather vague, and could mean anything: is Rainbow Dash just neglectful and self centred? or the type to assume her sibling is annoying? Or what? You were just speculating, as we all are, on the statement.
Yeah now that you mention it I'd love to see stories exploring exactly WHY celestia did what she did. Whatever Luna's was doing may have been pretty bad but it's still harsh to lock your sibling up for milennia. Why did she do it? What led to that act? I'd love to hear more about it.
I agree that it would be nice to see an episode featuring something along the lines of Rainbow Dash learning to be a better big sister and it'd be nice to see her character develop that way. Though I guess that kind of story has been done in fiction many times before (i.e. the old "odler character must look after yougner one and finds them a total pain in the butt, until they get in trouble and they have to go rescue them and they realise they're not so bad after all and even if they annoy each other, they're still sisters and love each other.) Still I guess this is another lesson that bears repeating to a younger audience.
Still I also think it's nice to see that characters DO have flaws and that while self improvement and learning about yourself IS a good thing, it doens't mean your perosnality has to be perfect. Dash is already a good example of that -she's utterly full of herself half the time, though her bravado is in part a mask, and her stubbornness and brashness can be annoyingh, but she's still nice.

And I see that this is just one of those possible meanings that you've read it. You've constructed a scenario where this WAS a conscious desicion by her parents, so this is really a speculatin.
I agree that would make for a great story to see Rainbow Dash learning to be a better big sibling (not that it isn't one that hasn't been told a hundred times before, the old "God I hate my sibling but... oh dear they're in trouble I need to help them! Hey they're not so bad after all", type of scenario, but hey those messages still need to be told to young people, I guess.
